Mad for musicals? You’re in for a treat this season.

Every year, Broadway tours and big musical productions bring plenty of reasons to dress up for a night at the theatre in Vancouver. But this season is especially exciting, with three standout productions making their debut.

From a fresh take on a Shakespearean love story to a Disney classic and a festive favourite, there’s a show to see no matter what kind of night you’re looking to have, whether it be a family outing, date night or a night out with friends.

So without further ado, these are the musicals to see in Vancouver this fall and winter, plus where to stay and eat before the curtain comes up.

Shows to See

Pop anthems, classic fairytales, holiday cheer. Broadway Vancouver is bringing two big touring productions to the Queen Elizabeth Theatre this season, while a holiday hit will take over The Stanley Theatre.

& Juliet | Sept 29 - Oct 4

First to the stage at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in downtown Vancouver is Broadway’s & Juliet. The show is a fun pick that reimagines what might have happened if Juliet’s story hadn’t ended with Romeo, and is packed with huge pop hits from songwriter and producer Max Martin. Think hits like “Since U Been Gone,” “Roar” and “I Want It That Way” that make it impossible not to sing along from your seat.

Make a night of it: For dinner, you can’t go wrong with Nightingale. Its extensive, award-winning menu is full of shareables perfect for a pre-show meal, and its setting inside a heritage building in Vancouver’s Coal Harbour puts it within about a 15-minute’s walk from the theatre. All the right romantic vibes.

For a nightcap afterwards, head to Keefer Bar, a Vancouver favourite known for its elaborate cocktails and moody, late-night-appropriate atmosphere.

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast | Nov 24 - 29

Enchantment, nostalgia and fun whether you’re young or just at heart. In November, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast brings a beloved fairytale from the screen to the stage with a new production that features spectacular sets, dazzling costumes and all the romance and Disney magic you remember. It’s made for a family night out, as the production is recommended for ages six and up.

Make a night of it: For dinner before the show, head to Moxies West Georgia. It has a family-friendly yet elevated menu, rooftop patio and prime downtown location that puts it a short walk from the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. Hard to beat.

Elf: The Musical | Nov 12 - Dec 27

What better way to get into the festive spirit than with Elf: The Musical? Whether the beloved Christmas movie is one of your holiday go-tos or you’ve never seen it, this Arts Club production at the Stanley BFL CANADA Stage is made for this time of year and will bring all the festive cheer.

Make a night of it: For a special pre-show dinner, head to Gary’s, a local favourite that’s earned a Bib Gourmand from the MICHELIN Guide. Then, keep the evening going with a drink at The Stable House Bistro, a neighbourhood bistro and wine bar. Both are a stone’s throw from The Stanley Theatre.

Where to Stay

Making a whole night (or weekend) of it? Staying close to the theatre means you can skip the traffic stress, take your time over dinner and even stroll home at the end of the night.
