The weather is warming up. The cherry blossoms are out. But there’s always a chance of rain. Vancouver is, after all, in a rainforest. Every Vancouverite knows it’s important to have the essentials, and we want you to be prepared, too. To help you plan your trip, we've put together a list of springtime essentials and tips on what to wear in Vancouver in March, April and May.

#1: Umbrella

In Vancouver, you learn to embrace the rain, since it's what makes our city so lush and green. Because it does rain a fair amount in the spring, an umbrella is an essential accessory. Pack a good travel-size umbrella, but if you get caught short, your hotel may have one for you to borrow.

#2: Walking Shoes

Vancouver is a very walkable city, which means you'll likely be getting in lots of steps. Rain or shine, there are always people strolling the seawall or many of the city's other scenic walking routes. If the cherry blossom and magnolia trees are in bloom, there's a good chance you'll want to walk to find the most Instagrammable spot. Because rain is always a possibility, a multipurpose shoe with a good rubber sole is the way to go.

#3: Sunglasses

Your sunnies are your best friend on a bright spring day. No one wants to be squinting in their vacation photos, and protecting your eyes is even more important. Pack your favourite pair and a backup for activities like whale watching, which is in full swing in the spring months.

#4: Camera

While you’re walking around the city, you will 100% be taking pictures of all the beautiful blossoms, incredible views, and amazing food. I know this seems obvious, but you don’t want to miss any photo ops! So whether that's on a disposable camera, film camera, or your phone, don't forget to capture lots of memories in the city and on day trips.

#5: Smartphone

A smartphone is not only a great camera, but also how to figure out how to get around, where to eat, etc. If you’re worried about roaming or using up your data, log on to Vancouver’s free wi-fi hotspots!

Top Tip: If you’ve forgotten anything, the region's outlet malls or any of our shopping districts will have you covered.

#6: Something to Carry It All In

Once you've gathered everything you need for exploring the city, you'll also need a good bag to carry it all. Waterproof or water-repellent bags are ideal for keeping your essentials dry. A backpack also makes an excellent pillow for when you decide to take a quick nap in the sun!

#7: Water Bottle

Exploring is a thirsty business, particularly as the weather warms. A reusable water bottle is a necessity, and you can fill it up from any tap. Vancouver tap water is some of the best in the world. If you want some flavour, stop in at one of the hundreds of Vancouver coffee shops. And you’ll never go wrong with a juice or smoothie from The Juice Truck or Jugo Juice!

#8: Elevated Outfit Option(s)

Vancouver is the land of lululemon and the birthplace of athleisure, so there are very few places in town where you need to dress up, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't make a night of it. When deciding what to wear in Vancouver in March, April and May, versatile layers are your best bet—you can keep things casual during the day, then swap your hiking boots for something a little more elevated for a night out. The city's food scene is MICHELIN-rated, and there are endless opportunities to dress up if you feel like doing so. But make sure your "going out clothes" work in case a storm rolls in.

#9: Compass Card

Not so much something to pack, but this is something you'll want to buy as soon as you get to Vancouver. Aside from walking, Vancouver’s public transit options are the best way to get around. You can pay fares with a Compass Card single fare or a loadable Compass card on a day pass or stored value. Learn how to get your Compass card and how much fare costs to prep for your trip. And when you get your card, here are six places absolutely worth taking transit to!

What to Wear in Vancouver in March, April, and May

Vancouver spring weather can be a bit unpredictable. There's a good chance your trip will bring sun, rain, wind, and maybe even a bit of hail. While the season brings warmer daytime temperatures, it can be quite chilly before and after the sun goes down. Dressing in layers is the best choice for visits to Vancouver in the spring.

  • Light sweaters
  • Long and short-sleeve T-shirts
  • Light coat
  • Packable rain shell with a hood

Spring is one of the best times to visit Vancouver. With the right layers and a few rain-ready essentials, you’ll be prepared for whatever Vancouver’s spring weather brings. Pack smart, embrace the changing forecast and get ready to enjoy cherry blossoms, outdoor adventures and everything else the city has to offer this season.
