Festivals and Events
Public Disco on Granville Street
Who says you need to wait until Friday to start your Labour Day weekend fun? Granvile Street has become this summer’s hot spot for feel good festivities. The party continues with Public Disco taking over the Granville Pedestrian Zone on September 2 from 4pm to 9pm with DJs playing street dance and house music. Dance with your after-work crew, play a round of chess, and keep your young ones busy at the Viva Kids Entertainment Zone. When everyone gets hungry and thirsty, grab a seat at one of Granville Street’s many patios, like Good Co., The Pawn Shop YVR Taco Bar or the always lively Donnellan’s Irish Pub.
TAIWANfest
The annual TAIWANfest is about all things Taiwanese but also about Taiwan’s relationship with the world. This year’s event happens September 5 to 7 at various ticketed venues as well as for free at šxʷƛ̓ənəq Xwtl’e7énk Square at the Vancouver Art Gallery and on Granville Street. Watch live performances by talented local artists, attend cooking workshops and browse the artist market. This year’s event is in dialogue with Scotland, so you can catch demos of Scottish country dancing. Of course, there’ll be plenty of diverse eats, including Taiwanese favourites.
PNE Fair
Taking place every summer since 1910, the PNE Fair is a beloved institution. It runs for just over two weeks, wrapping up as one of Vancouver’s biggest Labour Day events. Get there early because the crowds will be eager to cheer on the adorable SuperDogsTM during their 50th Anniversary performances. It’s also not a visit to the PNE without munching on mini donuts. Their Summer Night Concerts end with Pierce the Veil September 5, Sarah McLachlan September 6 and Boy George & Culture Club September 7.
Nikkei Matsuri
Burnaby’s popular Nikkei Matsuri is back. Running September 4 to 6 at the Nikkei National Museum and Cultural Centre, the festival transports you to Japan with taiko drumming performances, street food stalls and an anime market for snagging cool collectibles. While entry is ticketed, there’s a free community zone where the kids can fold origami.
Gastown Sunday Set
Strolling around the cobblestone streets of Gastown makes for a charming Vancouver Labour Day event. During the last Gastown Sunday Set of the season on September 6 from 1pm to 6pm, Water Street will transform into a pedestrian zone with local DJs and games. Browse local Gastown boutiques and soak up the scene with a bevy at one of their many street-side patios.
Bard on the Beach
The poetic words of William Shakespeare sound especially sweet in a tent with a backdrop of False Creek and the North Shore mountains. Bard on the Beach will showcase two plays on September 6 at 2pm, The Merry Wives of Windsor, a soccer-themed interpretation of the Bard’s hilarious comedy, as well as Goblin:Oedipus, a contemporary retelling of Sophocles’ Oedipus the King.
Sports and Entertainment
Vancouver Whitecaps
While FIFA World Cup 2026TM may be over, there’s still plenty of MLS soccer action. March to the match and enthusiastically chant for the Whitecaps on September 5 at BC Place as they take on St. Louis City.
Soccer & Technology from the FIFA Museum Exhibition
If you’re looking for educational Vancouver Labour Day events and are a soccer fan, you’ll be happy to know that Soccer & Technology from the FIFA Museum is on until September 7. Head to the giant soccer ball (aka Science World), and learn all about the sport’s techno wizardry, ranging from their video assistant referee (VAR) to the high speed cameras that catch the plays.
Markets
Vancouver Farmers Market
Vancouver Farmers Markets are going strong at the end of summer. Pick up sweet corn for dinner while browsing local artisan goods. During the Labour Day weekend, you can visit Riley Park and Trout Lake on September 5 and Kitsilano and Mount Pleasant on September 6.
Richmond Night Market
The Richmond Night Market is your destination for delicious and often zany Asian eats, from ramen donuts to a sashimi rice burger. Once you’ve gorged at the food stalls, shop for trinkets and catch the live entertainment. The Night Market, easily accessible by SkyTrain, is open every night of the Labour Day weekend.
Shipyards Night Market
Ride the SeaBus across the Burrard Inlet for a visit to North Van’s Shipyards Night Market, happening September 4. Besides views of the water and downtown, the Night Market offers an unforgettable evening. You can grab bites from the food trucks, enjoy a lager at the beer garden as well as browse crafted goods. Live music and a friendly crowd add to the community vibe.
