Discover Shakespeare reinvented by the sea
Shakespeare has a reputation. Centuries old, taught in classrooms, and performed in grand theatres for dressed-up crowds. Until you step inside the iconic waterfront tents at Sen̓áḵw / Vanier Park and discover how Bard on the Beach has been triumphantly changing that reputation, one season at a time.
From June to September, Bard brings a rotating mix of Shakespeare originals and bold new spins on his stories. And just as the festival reimagines these classics, it transforms the theatre experience itself. There’s no dress code and the vibe is laid back. If you show up in shorts with a picnic basket, you’ll fit right in.
You'll find the formal theatre lobby replaced by Bard Village, a lively open-air community hub where you can socialize, picnic, shop, and attend pre-show talks. In the main performance tent, there are no velvet curtains or a wall behind the covered stage. Instead, you’ll watch the actors perform against a backdrop of mountains, sea, and sky that is just as dramatic as the plays themselves.
Launched in 1990, Bard on the Beach is now Western Canada’s largest Shakespeare festival. What began as a single play has grown into a massive summer event in Vancouver’s performing arts scene.
What to expect

Adaptations with creative twists

Where is the Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival?
You’ll find Bard at 1695 Whyte Avenue, next to the Museum of Vancouver in Kitsilano. It’s located in Sen̓áḵw / Vanier Park on the ancestral lands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. This historic gathering place is rich with stories of change and transformation, themes echoed in the festival's productions.
The BMO Mainstage
Take a seat in the signature Mainstage, where over 700 guests enjoy modern, comfortable chairs and a state-of-the-art sound system. The highlight of this venue is its open-backed stage. Here you'll watch actors perform under cover while English Bay, the North Shore Mountains, and the West End skyline unfold behind them. As the play progresses through the evening, you’ll see the natural twilight and city lights seamlessly blend into the production's lighting design.
The BMO Mainstage is where you’ll experience everything from crowd-pleasing comedies and romances to powerful history plays and classic tragedies, with productions scheduled on alternating nights. This setup makes it easy to catch both shows over a single weekend.
The Douglas Campbell Theatre
For a more intimate experience, step inside the Douglas Campbell Theatre, where up to 256 guests are at the heart of the action. This performance space is completely enclosed with the layout and seating configuration adapting to the creative needs of each production.
This is where you will see the festival pushing artistic boundaries with unconventional staging of Shakespeare’s hidden gems, innovative new works, and fresh adaptations of world classics. Just like in the Mainstage, the plays in this theatre tent alternate nightly.

Make your Bard visit a midsummer night’s dream
- Be on time: Shows start promptly and latecomers will not be seated until there’s a suitable break in the action. Give yourself plenty of time to park, go through ticket scanning, and find your seat.
- Turn your outing into a “picnic and play”: Take advantage of the scenic waterfront. Pack a meal or pre-order a picnic box online. Note that outside alcohol is prohibited.
- Pre-order your intermission drinks: Order your drinks at the bar before the show starts so you can spend intermission soaking in the sunset instead of standing in line. Your beverages will be waiting at a designated pickup table when the first act ends.
- Beat the afternoon heat and evening chill: Tents can be warm during matinees, while evening shows can get chilly. Wear appropriate clothing and bring a sweater, jacket, or lap blanket for night. You can also rent blankets in Bard Village.
- Stay comfortable, protected and hydrated: Wear comfortable shoes for walking on grass and gravel. Bring sunscreen, a hat, and a reusable water bottle to refill on site.
