If you’re craving a quick escape from the city during the World Cup, Vancouver is perfectly positioned for unforgettable outdoor adventures. From mountains to laid-back islands, these nearby day-trip destinations deliver big scenery and fresh air without a long journey.

Whistler: Sky-High Adventures

The incredible views start on your journey to Whistler. The scenic bus ride on the Sea to Sky Highway takes about two hours from downtown Vancouver. It winds past ocean views, waterfalls, and granite cliffs. For a splurge-worthy option, book a Harbour Air floatplane that will whisk you from downtown Vancouver to Whistler in just 45 minutes. The flight includes a jaw-dropping aerial tour of volcanic peaks and tumbling glaciers.

Once you arrive in Whistler, you have tons of options for outdoor fun. Take the gondola up to the top of Whistler Mountain for panoramic views and access to hiking trails. From there, hop on the Peak 2 Peak Gondola to experience the world's longest unsupported span gondola. The 10-minute ride takes you between Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains as you dangle over 400 metres above the valley floor. For an added thrill, ride in the glass-bottomed car.

Down at valley level, Lost Lake Park is perfect for a picnic, a refreshing swim, or an easy hike through the forest. Or get an adrenaline rush on a zipline tour as you feel the fresh mountain air on your face as you speed past towering trees and cascading creeks.

Bowen Island: A Laid-Back Escape

Bowen Island feels worlds away, but it is surprisingly close. From downtown Vancouver, it’s about 1.5 hours by transit, combining a bus ride with a short ferry ride across the waters of Howe Sound.

The island’s cozy village of Snug Cove is walkable, so you can go car-free. Explore the boutiques, cafes and restaurants in the village before heading off on an outdoor adventure.

Book a tour with Bowen Island Sea Kayaking to explore the rugged coastline, watching for seals and seabirds. On land, hike beside a salmon-bearing stream in Crippen Regional Park to scenic Killarney Lake. Or tackle the tough hike up Mount Gardiner for sweeping views of Howe Sound and Vancouver.

North Vancouver: Nature With City Views

North Vancouver is one of the easiest day trips from Vancouver. You can get there in just 35 minutes from downtown via Seabus or bus, both part of Vancouver’s easy-to-use public transit system. The journey is scenic too, with postcard-worthy views from the Lions Gate Bridge or across Burrard Inlet on the Seabus.

Immerse yourself in nature at the Capilano Suspension Bridge, one of Vancouver’s most iconic attractions. Built in 1889, the bridge stretches 137 metres across the canyon. Brave the gently swaying bridge, then explore the elevated walkways through the coastal rainforest on the other side.

Or take the gondola up to Grouse Mountain to enjoy the quintessentially Canadian lumberjack show. Don’t miss the grizzly bear refuge, home to two orphaned bears. And allow time to stroll the trails through the alpine forest and admire the views of the city far below you.

Finish your day at the Shipyards District on the edge of Burrard Inlet. This former industrial area now offers shopping and outdoor dining with the best view of the city skyline at sunset.

Victoria: Coastal Charm in the Capital

Victoria, BC.

Take a quick getaway to Victoria, British Columbia’s capital. The scenic 35-minute floatplane flight with Harbour Air or Seair Seaplanes takes you from Vancouver’s harbour to Victoria’s. If you prefer a slower journey (about 3.5 hours), book a scenic BC Ferries sailing across the Strait of Georgia - you might even spot a whale. Rent a car for the ferry trip or get there via bike or public transit. Transit and ferry options take about 3.5 hours if you prefer a slower journey.

The charming city abounds with boutiques and museums, but it's also easy to embrace nature without leaving Victoria’s downtown core. Enjoy the fresh ocean breeze and views of the Strait of Juan de Fuca as you wander along the Dallas Road Oceanfront Trail. Or pick up a picnic lunch and relax on the manicured lawns of Beacon Hill Park.

Take to the ocean on a whale watching tour. Boats leave directly from the downtown harbour, and sightings of orcas and humpbacks are common. For a different perspective, rent a kayak and glide past historic buildings and bobbing boats in the inner harbour.

Squamish: Where Mountains Meet the Sea

Squamish, BC

The bus ride from downtown Vancouver to Squamish takes just one hour, but it delivers epic scenery with mountains rising directly from the ocean.

Once you arrive, explore the independent boutiques and cafes along Cleveland Avenue. Detour to the ocean to visit Sp’akw’us Feather Park, which has incredible views. For a quick hike, visit Shannon Falls, which thunders 335 metres down a granite cliff, filling the air with mist. If you’re up for a challenging trek, follow the rugged and steep trail to the top of the Stawamus Chief. Peer down at the town below you from the 702-metre-tall summit.

For incredible views with less effort, let the Sea to Sky Gondola whisk you up into the alpine. Have a snack on their sunny viewing deck, brave a walk across the Sky Pilot Suspension Bridge, and drink in the views of glacier-topped peaks.
