There was a time in the city, not too long ago, when good taco joints were few and far between. In the last few years though, there has been a flurry of openings. This summer is no exception. My boyfriend and I, especially in the summer, love going for tacos. It’s a fairly inexpensive meal, we have an excuse for margaritas, and it’s a fun, laid-back eating experience!

Two recent openings are definite must-visits when a taco craving hits.

Tacofino (1025 Mainland Street)

What began in 2009 as a food truck, serving Californian Baja-style tacos, in scenic Tofino, BC, has, over the years, transformed into a local taco empire/phenomenon. Already boasting three food trucks and three restaurants, Tacofino in trendy Yaletown is the newest addition to the growing family. This location features counter-service, with a 38-seat dining room and a patio with a dozen seats. You can also get take-out for an outdoor date at the park or the beach.

Décor-wise, the vibe is playful, drawing upon “SoCal surf-punk style” and the 80s as inspiration. Tile mosaic tables are juxtaposed with a vibrant floor-to-ceiling mural with splashy images of palm trees and sunny ocean-side life.

When I go to Tacofino, I invariably order the tempura fish taco with salsa fresca and chipotle mayo because it’s so incredible good. However, new items at this location are mighty tempting, like the pepper shrimp with spicy peanut sauce, smoked tuna burrito, and white bean taco.

My boyfriend isn’t much of a seafood fan, so he likes the tater tot carnitas burrito and the lemongrass chicken taco. And we wash it all down with craft beer (eg Tofino Brewing) or a cocktail, such as a Mexican mule.

I was really sad to hear that Supermarine in Kitsilano was closing, but was excited to hear that the owners had decided to rebrand the restaurant as a taco place. Lucky Taco exudes casual fun, from the brightly painted interiors, to the tropical table designs. The design and the food concept are ideal for the location, just steps away from Kitsilano Beach.

The menu is equally appealing and accessible, with snacks like battered chicken wings with sticky chili glaze and ginger ranch dip; and crispy tater tots with chipotle salsa. I’m drawn to the fried chicken taco with ginger ranch sauce, pickled red cabbage, and tajin (a Mexican seasoning). My boyfriend is more of a fan of the al pastor, with braised pork, adobo rub, mole verde, and grilled pineapple salsa. There are also drinks aplenty, including pink sangria, tequila, and local and Mexican beer selections.
