Contrary to popular belief, winter isn’t the time to hide out and hibernate.

At least, not in Vancouver. Sure, the colder weather encourages us to slow down and cozy up. But locals know that winter is actually a time when Vancouver comes alive.

Mountains lit up by bright white snow. Streets lined with twinkly lights and filled with the scent of hot chocolate. Endless winter activities to dive into. And the best part? Vancouver’s winter wonderland is packed with family-friendly fun, offering countless things to do with kids.

So, for anyone eager to break out of the regular routine and looking for fresh family vacation ideas, here’s your guide to the ultimate winter weekend in Vancouver.

Friday: Check in, ice skate and sip hot chocolate

First things first, check in somewhere that your family fun can begin the moment you arrive. There are plenty of centrally located, family-friendly places to stay that position you close to all the winter excitement, from The Wedgewood Hotel & Spa to The Pinnacle Hotel Harbourfront.

Once you’ve settled in, lace up for a little evening rink action. Vancouver’s outdoor ice rinks are the perfect way to start your weekend. Robson Square Ice Rink is right in the heart of downtown, or just across the water, the outdoor rink in the Shipyard’s District often features live music and food vendors. Both offer rentals and welcome all skill levels, so simply show up ready to have some fun.

After your skate, thaw out with one of Vancouver’s best hot chocolates. Thierry, Giovanne Café and Blenz are city favourites (and hot tip, Blenz’s chocolate whip is a hit with kids). If your visit lands in January or February, you just might catch the annual Vancouver Hot Chocolate Festival. It’s when cafes across the city serve limited-edition creations that make this treat the star of the season.

Saturday: Mountain fun, dinner après-ski style and Canyon Lights

No Vancouver winter weekend would be complete without some time spent in the snow. And while it doesn’t always blanket the city itself, one of the best things about Vancouver is how close the mountains are.

Grouse Mountain, Mount Seymour and Cypress Mountain are all less than an hour from downtown, making it easy to turn your morning into a full-blown alpine day. And each offers something special for families.

Mount Seymour is a go-to for snowshoeing, with beginner-level, well-marked trails and rentals right on site. At Grouse Mountain, the Sliding Zone snow tubing area is always a hit with kids (and parents who are kids at heart). Cypress Mountain also offers snow play zones and stunning lookout points over the city.

Then, warm back up with comfort food that everyone at the table will love. Vancouver is definitely not lacking in the cozy dinner spot department, with plenty of places perfect for an après-ski-style meal. For a fun, interactive experience the kids won’t soon forget, head to one of the many restaurants in the city that serve fondue. Or, opt for hearty soups and gooey mac and cheese. Cozy classics that never miss.

After all that mountain air and melted cheese, wrap up the day's adventures with one of Vancouver’s most magical winter experiences.

A rainforest draped in thousands of twinkling lights. Evergreens sparkling like something out of a storybook. A famous suspension bridge glowing against the dark canyon below. That’s your next stop, Capilano Suspension Bridge Park’s annual Canyon Lights display.

Here, the whole family can wander through the illuminated treetops, take in the views along the Cliffwalk, and stop for photos along the way. The scene is pure wonder, one of those things to do with kids that is just as magical for parents.

Sunday: Explore Science World and the Space Centre

Following a full day of outdoor wonder, Sunday slows things down with cozy, curiosity-filled adventures closer to sea level.

Science World didn’t become one of Vancouver’s most iconic family attractions without reason. And the best part about it? Whether it's rain, snow or sun outside, you can trust that inside, a world of wonder always awaits.

Start your morning by arriving there in style. Hop on the Aquabus from one of eight different dock locations and glide across False Creek right to The Village, dropping you steps away from Science World.

Then, head inside the dome, where kids can experiment, play and learn across multiple floors of interactive exhibits. And that’s not to say there isn’t fun to be had for the parents, too. While you watch your kids light up as they make their own discoveries, you might find yourself making a few of your own as well.

When you’re ready to refuel, grab lunch nearby or stop for another round of hot chocolate (you are on vacation, after all) before heading to your next adventure, the HR MacMillan Space Centre.

The Space Centre is the perfect follow-up to Science World, swapping microscopes for telescopes. Kids can explore everything from black holes to life aboard the International Space Station inside this long-loved Vancouver landmark.

But the planetarium shows are the real show-stoppers, sending families on journeys through the stars under a massive domed screen. You’ll be pinching yourself, checking that you haven’t actually stepped straight into the cosmos.

By the end of the weekend, you’ll have explored mountains, forests, galaxies… all without ever leaving the city. Vancouver in winter is pure magic, and for families especially, the kind of place that you leave with lasting memories.
