If you’re looking for a fitness race that blends strength and endurance in a city devoted to an active lifestyle, there’s no better place to do it than Vancouver. HYROX is coming to our city for the first time on December 20 and 21, 2025.

What is HYROX?

Known as the “world series of fitness racing,” HYROX is an indoor fitness competition that has exploded in popularity worldwide since its inception in 2017. What makes it unique is its standardized race format with eight 1 km running laps alternating with 8 different functional workout stations.

That means you run 1 km, hit a station (think sled pushes, burpees, rowing, etc.), then repeat, eight times in total. Competitors can enter as singles, doubles, or four-person relay teams in open and pro classes. The race is designed to be inclusive and welcomes seasoned athletes and first-time competitors alike.

HYROX Vancouver represents a milestone. It’s the first time the race will be held in Western Canada. The iconic Vancouver Convention Centre will provide an incredibly scenic venue. The building juts out over the harbour and offers gorgeous views of the waterfront and the North Shore Mountains beyond. The Seawall wraps around the Convention Centre’s exterior, teeming with locals running and cycling at all times of the day. It’s a reminder that this competition unfolds in one of the world’s most active and picturesque cities.

Where to Workout Before the Race

HYROX experts advise tapering your workouts in the days before your race and finishing with a few minutes of light walking, jogging, yoga, or cycling the day before your competition.

If you’re looking for a gym workout, Vancouver has some high-quality HYROX-affiliated gyms. Elite Performance and Function Health Club, both in downtown Vancouver, specialize in functional training and small group classes.

One of the most Vancouver things you can do is lace up your shoes and hit a section of the Seawall for a run, walk, or bike ride. This 28-kilometre-long waterfront path circles downtown and passes in front of the Vancouver Convention Centre. Training outside will get you race-ready and also give you the mental boost of spending time in nature without leaving the city.

To keep your body mobile and ready, check out yoga studios like YYOGA in downtown Vancouver or Modo Yoga in Olympic Village. A relaxing yin yoga or meditation class with light stretching and breathwork is the ideal way to prepare your body and mind for race-day demands.

Fueling for Performance

In the lead-up to your HYROX competition, experts recommend eating complex carbohydrates and moderate protein. Limit your heavy fats and keep fibre intake reasonable to avoid digestive issues on race day.

The day before the race, go for a familiar, carb-rich meal that’s easy on your stomach. Locals love the pasta at Ask for Luigi. For lighter fare, head to TurF in Kitsilano for clean-eating options like protein pancakes or power bowls.

On race morning, stick with simple but energizing options like oatmeal, hearty breakfast bowls from Tractor, or a simple breakfast plate with eggs, bacon, toast, and greens at Dalina.

Recovery After the Race

After crossing the finish line, rehydrate and refuel with a smoothie that combines carbs and protein. Local favourites include Body Energy Club and Oakberry. Thankfully, both are within easy staggering distance of the Vancouver Convention Centre.

Don’t let your muscles cramp up! Keep it moving, gently. Try a relaxing yoga class, stroll around the shops of Granville Island or wander through the snow at the Light Walk at Grouse Mountain for a low-impact wind-down.

It’s also a great time to treat yourself to some well-earned pampering. The Fairmont Spa offers luxurious massage and wellness treatments. Allow time for rest and relaxation in their outdoor lounge space with great city views. For something uniquely Vancouver, book a session in the private spa pods at Circle Wellness on Granville Island. Each one includes a cedar soaking tub, sauna, cold plunge, and heated stone lounge space to facilitate cycles of heat, cold, and rest.
