Here in Vancouver, we do winter a little differently. Thanks to our temperate coastal climate, we’re lucky to have some of the most mild winters in Canada. We’re proud to say that frozen toes are rare here, so you can focus on enjoying all the winter fun this city has to offer without worrying about catching a major chill.

West Coast winters are all about having the option to spend the day skiing and snowboarding in the mountains just a short drive from Downtown Vancouver, then coming back to the city to enjoy dinner and drinks without needing to throw on your heaviest parka.

But what should you wear on an average Vancouver winter day? What temperatures can you expect? How often does it snow? We’ve put together answers to some of the most common questions about Vancouver weather below.

What temperatures can you expect in Vancouver during the winter?

Perched right on the edge of the Pacific Ocean, Vancouver’s coastal climate means our winters are generally mild. Typical Vancouver temperature ranges during the winter fall between 0°C and 8°C (32°F and 46°F).

Breaking it down by month, that means that December generally sees temperatures from 1 to 6°C (34-43°F), January around –1 to 6°C (30-43°F), and February typically falls between 2 to 8°C (36-46°F).

Because temperatures usually stay above freezing, there are many nights where it’s warm enough to head outside to do some outdoor winter shopping under Downtown’s twinkling lights without battling the elements.

How often does it snow in Vancouver?

We almost always get enough snow to build a snowman (or two!) in Vancouver, though not necessarily for long. The severity of snowfalls varies, but on average we see about 10 snowy days per year.

When it comes to Vancouver weather, January is the coldest month. On occasion, rare cold snaps can drop temps down to -8.9°C (15.98° F).

On those rare winter days when it does snow, we recommend checking out some outdoor activities, with endless winter adventures in and around Vancouver to choose from.

For a truly magical snowy evening in the city (and great photo opportunities!) check out the Robson Square Ice Rink, or the The Shipyards Skate Plaza in North Vancouver’s Shipyard’s district.

How much rain should you expect during Vancouver’s winter season?

Vancouver gets roughly 1,100 to 1,400 mm (43-55 inches) of rain annually, which is what keeps our city wonderfully lush and green.

Rainy weather doesn’t stop Vancouverites and visitors alike from getting outside, though! With plenty of rainy day hikes to choose from, you’ll want to throw on a rain jacket and take in the breathtaking nature here while the trees are at their most vibrant.

When you’re ready to dry off and head inside, there are endless cozy indoor options scattered across the city. We have tons of cafes, breweries, and other unique culinary experiences to suit everyone’s tastes. Grab a mug of hot cocoa or a locally crafted ale and watch the winter rain dot the windows.

What does “cold” feel like here in Vancouver?

Because we’re part of the Pacific Temperate Rainforest, cold in Vancouver can feel more damp and chilly here than in dryer climates. The good news, though, is that the name of the game here is strategically layering warm and waterproof clothing, meaning you won’t need to lug around your heaviest down coats and snowboots.

Vancouver’s mild climate compared to the rest of Canada means that it makes a great family-friendly destination that’s easy to get around in for children and older family members. No 10-foot snow drifts here!

What should you pack for a trip to Vancouver in the winter?

Those with small suitcases, you’re in luck! We recommend that you pack with light, layered outfits in mind.

Essential clothing items include:

  • Water-resistant shoes
  • A waterproof jacket
  • An umbrella
  • Long sleeve and short sleeve shirts
  • A sweater for layering (wool or fleece)
  • Warm accessories like gloves and hats

For more in-depth packing inspiration, see our Outdoor Gear to Pack for Winter Adventures in Vancouver resource guide.

And don’t worry if you forget to pack something! The shopping district on West 4th Ave in Kitsilano has tons of great winter clothing options, including Arc’teryx and Fjällräven.

So what are you waiting for! Head outside and embrace the winter elements in Vancouver. Your friends in colder climates will be jealous.
