Vancouver’s Inner Child Itinerary
Let’s admit it, sometimes, being an adult is just plain boring. Work. Budgets. Laundry. Trying to eat right and get enough exercise. It’s a lot. And when we’re on vacation, or even just our day off, all we really want is to disconnect and feel like a kid again.
So why not, for at least a day, swap all the must-dos, chores and all the shoulds for some stimulation, silliness, and a little sugar?
This itinerary takes you on a nostalgic tour of Vancouver. We’re talking throwback treats, take-the-long-way transportation, novelty games and candy-fuelled detours. Because sometimes, a little childhood-coded fun is just what the kid in you needs.
Brunch at Sophie’s Cosmic Cafe | Kitsilano
Start your fun-filled day the right way: with comfort food in an eclectic space that’ll transport you back in time.
Sophie’s Cosmic Cafe is a Kitsilano institution. Just a few blocks up from buzzing Kits Beach, right on bumping West 4th Ave, this nostalgic diner is packed with vintage toys, metal lunch boxes, and shelves full of quirky collectables. All designed to bring you back to your kid self.
Since opening in ‘88, Sophie’s has drawn locals, tourists, and families (yes, there’s a kids’ menu). The menu is massive, with eggs every way (scrambles, omelets, bennys), plus burgers, classic sandwiches, salads, and plenty of vegetarian options.
And the milkshakes? Seriously Instagram-worthy. A visit without one would be simply incomplete. Want to add a dose of adult fun? The option to spike it with the liqueur of your choice is on the table.
Hop On a HeyYa! Cart | Downtown
Didn’t we all dream of whipping around in a golf cart before realizing that, one day, we’d be able to actually drive?
If that was you, too, we’ve found your transportation for the day. Convenient, easy to park, eco-friendly and ridiculously fun, HeyYa! Carts are guaranteed to bring out your inner child.
They offer 4-, 6-, or 8-seaters, so whether you’re planning a Vancouver date activity or a full-family adventure, you’re set. Conveniently located downtown, reserve one of these little street-legal EVs online, pick it up either right at the Westin Bayshore hotel or at 1040 West Pender Street, and let the sightseeing begin. They’re easily one of the best ways to take in Stanley Park, carting between beaches, food with a view, and photo ops.
And if you’re feeling extra adventurous, you could even golf-cart your way up to VanDusen Botanical Garden for some flower-filled fun. Pro tip: if you're in Vancouver on August 30th 2025, the garden’s hosting its 50-Year Celebration with live music, food trucks, and crafty activities.
In short? It’s the carefree-kid way to explore the city.
Get a Sugar Hit at The Candy Room | Downtown
After your ride around town, chances are you’ll be craving something sweet. And honestly, few things feel more nostalgic than visiting a proper candy shop.
Right downtown on Robson, The Candy Room is a make-your-own-bag heaven. The idea of it not having what your sweet tooth wants? Unthinkable. With over 400 bulk candy items, international imports, nostalgic treats and novelty finds, this place is stacked.
Grab a bag, fill it up and snack on it throughout the day, or save it for a late-night treat (the Candy Room is located steps away from the Wedgewood, the Rosedale, and the L’Hermitage hotels, just to name a few). Either way, a stop here is a must.
Play Your Heart Out at The Rec Room | Downtown
Okay, time to burn off some of that sugar. How? By making your way through a feast of arcade games, of course.
There’s something about a handful of tokens (in this case, tickets) and hours ahead of you to just simply play that just feels right. The Rec Room, with a downtown location on Granville Street, is the definition of adult fun. Every game your inner kid can conjure, plus a full-service bar. Need we say more?
They call it “the ultimate social playground,” and they’re not wrong. With all ages admitted, this is a spot for friend hangs, date nights, family outings, you name it. Add a full restaurant and live entertainment to the mix, and you’re in serious danger of never leaving.
Whatever your favourite games, racing, shooting hoops or hitting targets, they’ve got it. And then some. So don’t be surprised if you close the place down.
So, who says grown-ups can't have fun? From carting around town to candy and a carnival of games, make Vancouver your playground. Your inner child will thank you.
