Orchestra performing outdoors at sunset with conductor leading and a large audience in the background.

ANNUAL EVENT

Symphony at Sunset

No tickets required for a world-class orchestra

The summer sky holds its light over the musicians as they tune their instruments. You watch the conductor step onto the podium to a roar of applause. Hands rise and fall in a rhythmic blur, stretching as far as the eye can see.

As the conductor raises the baton, it feels as if everyone around you shares a single breath. For a moment, you become very still, sinking into your blanket on the warm grass. The first notes float through the salty air before swelling into a rich orchestral sound. Around you, picnics spread out in every direction, kids ride on shoulders for a better view, and the music drifts over it all, carrying into the city as the sky slowly gives way to dusk.

Experience Symphony at Sunset, one of the most anticipated Vancouver events of the summer. For one night each year, the concert pairs world-class orchestral music with Vancouver's natural beauty. The event is free and there’s no dress code or age restriction, welcoming everyone to attend.

Where is the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra outdoor concert?

Symphony at Sunset is normally at Sunset Beach, in the West End. In 2026, the event temporarily moved to David Lam Park in Yaletown due to construction.

Sunset Beach, (1204 Beach Ave)

This stretch of waterfront gives you an open view west across English Bay, so the sun drops directly behind the orchestra as the evening moves toward its final pieces. Grass rolls right up to the shoreline, giving you plenty of room to spread out a blanket. Being right on the water also means you get a natural amphitheatre, with the skyline, the North Shore Mountains, and the bay all forming the backdrop as the music plays.

The park sits within walking distance of Davie Village, so you can turn the concert into a full evening out with dinner or drinks nearby. Rent a paddleboard or walk the seawall toward Stanley Park, and look for "217.5 Arc X 13," a public sculpture by Bernar Venet, near the shoreline. It's the kind of place that makes arriving early feel less like waiting and more like part of the evening itself.

How to get to the Symphony at Sunset

By car, taxi, or rideshare: Enter the park name into your navigation app. Sunset Beach is the regular location but the event was temporarily moved to David Lam Park in 2026.

By transit: Use the TransLink Planner to find the fastest bus or SkyTrain route. Both Sunset Beach and David Lam Park are within easy reach of several routes.

By bike: Sunset Beach and David Lam Park connect directly to the Seawall. Use Vancouver's interactive cycling map to plan your route. Bike parking or valet service is typically available on-site.

By water taxi: False Creek Ferries stop at both Sunset Beach and David Lam Park. The Aquabus also serves the Yaletown side. Check their respective sites for schedules and routes.

Accessible arrival: Check the City of Vancouver site for accessible parking and drop off information for Symphony at Sunset.

Parking: Parking near the venue is limited, especially on concert day. If you drive, arrive early and expect nearby streets to fill quickly.

Fine-tune your Symphony at Sunset experience

Save the date: Treat Symphony at Sunset as a fixed point on your calendar, planning around it the way you would a birthday. If you miss this one, you're waiting until next summer for another chance.

Arrive earlier than you think: Symphony at Sunset is a popular Vancouver event and seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Arrive early to find a comfortable spot, settle in, and enjoy the atmosphere before the concert begins.

What to wear: This is an outdoor concert, so dress for the weather and evening temperatures. Bring layers, as waterfront areas can feel cooler after the sun goes down. Comfortable shoes are recommended.

What to bring: Pack a low-back chair for comfortable viewing and a blanket for picnic or warmth. You may also want to bring food, water bottle, sunscreen, and a light jacket or sweater for the evening.

What not to bring: To help everyone enjoy the concert, do not bring large tents, tarps, umbrellas or other items that may block the view. Barbecues, open fires, smoking and alcohol are not allowed.

Pets: Large crowds can be stressful for animals, so leaving pets at home is recommended. If you bring a dog, it must remain on a leash and wear identification tags. Certified service animals are welcome.

Leaving after the concert: To avoid the surge of foot traffic once the final note fades, plan to use the local water taxi service as your primary way to exit. While thousands of attendees crowd the sidewalks and transit stops at once, these small ferries offer a frequent and much faster route away from the site.
