Episode 2: Through the Valley

Season 2 The Last Of Us

Episode 2: Through the Valley

Episode summary

In Episode 2, Joel’s choice to save Ellie [Bella Ramsey] finally catches up to him just as the Jackson settlement comes under siege by a massive horde of infected. Behind the scenes, filming returns to Squamish and takes us to Mission BC.

Abby [Kaitlyn Dever] is the star of this episode and she gives us a gritty, emotional performance. Plagued by dreams of her father’s death, she wakes in a snowy lodge, filmed in Mission BC. She’s joined by her fellow ex-Fireflies (Owen, Nora, Mel, and Manny), who have turned the lodge into a temporary base of operations. Spying on Jackson using binoculars, Abby and her gang plan to infiltrate the settlement and capture Joel in order to take their revenge.

In Jackson, the community is already on high alert when a massive horde of infected swarm toward the settlement and throw themselves against the walls of the large-scale Squamish set. The siege that follows is season 2’s most ambitious action sequence yet and shows how fragile the peace in Jackson really is. Meanwhile, caught in a blizzard, Joel and Dina rescue Abby, unaware of her true motives. Abby leads them back to her lodge, setting in motion a brutal confrontation with devastating consequences.

The lodge where Abby and her gang are hiding out, and where she lures Joel later in the episode, was shot in Mission BC, a quiet town about an hour and a half east of Vancouver. Situated on the southern coastal mountain slopes overlooking the Fraser River, Mission is known for its beautiful scenery, outdoor spaces, and close knit community which means it shares a lot in common with the Jackson settlement—minus the zombies of course.

Due to lack of snow on the day of the shoot, the production team had to dress the building to fit the blizzardy setting. Even in Canada, you can’t always count on fresh powder when you need it. Unfortunately the house is on private property, so you won’t be able to visit it. But if you’re a golfer, and the gruesome golf club scene in this episode doesn't bother you, the Cedar Ridge Golf Course is just down the road.

On the run from a horde of infected, Joel and Abby duck into an abandoned mine where they are reunited with Dina. In reality these scenes were filmed at the Britannia Mine Museum, located along the stunning Sea-to-Sky Highway about 45 minutes north of Vancouver. Once the site of the largest copper mine in the world, this historic landmark has transformed into a National Historic Site and an award-winning, internationally recognized education and tourist destination.

The location’s raw, industrial feel has made it a favourite among filmmakers—it’s also been featured in productions like The 100 and The X-Files. While you’re there, explore the underground tunnels on a guided train tour, experience the BOOM! multisensory show inside the historic Mill No. 3 building, or pan for real gold. It’s a fascinating look at BC’s mining legacy—and the kind of place where it’s easy to imagine a world reclaimed by nature.

The Jackson Wyoming settlement, under brutal siege in this episode, was built and filmed in Squamish, a scenic town just an hour north of Vancouver. Known as the "Outdoor Recreation Capital of Canada," Squamish offers stunning mountain views, dense forests, and crystal-clear glacial rivers—perfectly capturing the wild beauty of The Last of Us. It's also an ideal day trip from Vancouver, making it a must-visit destination for anyone seeking an outdoor adventure.

Episode 2 makes it clear why the crew went to all the trouble of building Jackson from the ground up—so they could tear it down in epic fashion. So no, unfortunately you can’t visit this filming location, but you can still experience the jaw-dropping scenery of Squamish by taking a ride on the Sea-to-Sky Gondola. This thrilling gondola ride offers sweeping views of the town, the Stawamus Chief Mountain, Howe Sound, and the coastal rainforest below.
