Season 2 The Last Of Us

Episode 1: Future Days

Episode summary

The Season 2 premiere dives into the emotional fallout of Joel’s choices and his strained bond with Ellie, filmed in notable locations near Vancouver, such as Squamish and New Westminster.

Following Joel’s murderous rescue mission of the Season 1 Finale, the Fireflies, led by rage-stricken Abby [Kaitlyn Dever], mourn their fallen ones, reminding us that violence leaves real people in its wake. As years pass, Joel and Ellie build lives in Jackson, a custom-built set in the scenic town of Squamish, an hour north of Vancouver. As Ellie searches for truth and establishes her own identity, her anger towards overprotective Joel grows. Joel, meanwhile, is haunted by the truth he hides.

We’re introduced to another new character, Ellie’s best friend Dina [Isabela Merced]. The duo encounter a strange new type of infected which raises questions at a town meeting, shot in the town hall of New Westminster, a 25 minutes skytrain ride from Vancouver. During a New Year’s party, emotional tension flares, the rift deepening between Ellie and Joel. As the night unfolds, far beyond Jackson’s quiet borders, danger begins to stir.

The Jackson Wyoming community, where most of the episode takes place, was built and filmed in Squamish, a scenic town just an hour north of Vancouver. Known as the "Outdoor Recreation Capital of Canada," Squamish offers stunning mountain views, dense forests, and crystal-clear glacial rivers—perfectly capturing the wild beauty of The Last of Us. It's also an ideal day trip from Vancouver, making it a must-visit destination for anyone seeking an outdoor adventure.

The Jackson set, previously constructed in Canmore Alberta, was completely reconstructed in Squamish for the filming of Season 2. Although you can’t visit this filming location, you can still experience the jaw-dropping scenery of Squamish by taking a ride on the Sea-to-Sky Gondola. This thrilling gondola ride offers sweeping views of the town, the Stawamus Chief Mountain, Howe Sound, and the coastal rainforest below.

New Westminster’s Town Hall gets a brief cameo in this episode, standing in for the Jackson Community’s meeting hall. Just 25 minutes from Downtown Vancouver by SkyTrain, “New West” is a buzzing riverfront community and a hotspot for craft breweries. While you won’t be able to tour the inside of the town hall, there are lots of exciting things to check out nearby including civic buildings, heritage homes, and views of the Fraser River.

After Ellie and Dina’s adventure through the Greenplace Market, there's a short but notable scene set inside the town hall where the series’ leads are debriefed and reprimanded by the town’s leadership. If you’re looking for an easy place to spend an afternoon, New West is a great place to stroll along the scenic Fraser River, tour historic Columbia Street, or picnic in the park.

A building near the north end of Tranquille Road in Kamloops was transformed into Greenplace Market, the abandoned grocery store that Ellie and Dina explore in the episode. Despite the snowy backdrop seen in the show, Kamloops is actually one of BC’s sunniest cities with more than 2,000 hours of sunshine each year.

The market hosts one of the episode’s more suspenseful scenes and our closest encounter with the infected so far this season. While you won’t be able to visit the set, Kamloops is well worth the trip if you're looking for wide-open landscapes, sunny skies, and a slower pace. From hiking and golfing, to sipping local wine and cider, Kamloops offers a great blend of outdoor adventure and small-town charm.
