Film Venue Spotlight: Sea to Sky Region

Drive the gloriously scenic Sea to Sky Highway through Stanley Park (where Christian and Ana seal their contract with a kiss in Fifty Shades of Grey) and across the Lions Gate Bridge to make the 40-minute trip into the mountains where some of Hollywood’s favourite movie locations await. (Don’t have a car of your own? You can shoot up the highway in a luxury car courtesy of Scenic Rush’s thrilling Sea to Sky Experience.)

First, check out the Britannia Mine Museum, which features 210km of spooky tunnels and a 20-storey mountainside mill – no wonder crews from atmosphere thrillers like The X-Files, Fantastic Fourand Dark Angel have mined the museum’s rich cinematic reserves. (Read more about filming at the Britannia Mine Museum here.)

One of the best-kept secrets of Britannia Beach is the superb coffee and Morning Glory muffins at Galileo Coffee Company. You don’t need a stargate to get there, but they are definitely out of this world! After fueling up, head to the Sea to Sky Gondola, where you can hike and do summit yoga in the summer, and snowshoe before settling down to a hearty fondue in the winter. You’ll recognize the Sea to Sky Gondola’s suspension bridge in scenes from Altered Carbon and The Magicians.

Have some time? We recommend spending an entire weekend exploring the Sea to Sky region – here’s a suggested itinerary to get you started.
