Comfort Food Season: Vancouver’s Coziest Fall Restaurants

There’s something cinematic about Vancouver in the fall. Blankets of mist drift across Stanley Park. Lush green forests are dotted with red and golden accents. Summertime sunset swims are traded for umbrella walks around Pacific Spirit Regional Park. And as temperatures drop, our palettes change too. We crave rich, hearty stews in dimly lit restaurants where we can warm up by a fire. And lucky for us, there is no shortage of warm and cozy restaurants as comforting as autumn itself.
Burgoo - Downtown Vancouver, Mount Pleasant, North Vancouver, Point Grey

If fall could hug you back, it would look a lot like Burgoo. This restaurant has perfected the art of comfort food, serving up soul-warming dishes in four locations across the city. Burgoo North Vancouver features rich wood paneling and a crackling fireplace that feels more like a winter cabin than an urban restaurant. Hop on the SeaBus and be there in less than 15 minutes from downtown Vancouver.
It’s impossible to go wrong when ordering, but whatever you do, start with a bowl of their French onion soup. Caramelized onion beef broth and housemade croutons are enveloped in a blanket of melty cheese that just might take your breath away. And we’re not being overdramatic.
Ask for Luigi - Railtown
Tucked away in Railtown is one of Vancouver’s most beloved Italian restaurants, Ask for Luigi. This unassuming pasta joint has earned its gnocchi of approval, with Michelin recognition and praise from celebrities like Vancouver’s own Ryan Reynolds. A nonna’s love is stirred into every pot of sauce, and you’ll feel at home in the intimate dining room filled with rustic wooden tables and mismatched chairs.
Ask for Luigi captures the magic of Italian dining, serving up handmade pastas and melt-in-your-mouth meatballs for an experience that’s refined, yet approachable. Every dish is a masterpiece, but don’t stop after the mains. The night can’t end without a slice of their olive oil cake.
Pourhouse - Gastown
Tucked inside a building more than a hundred years old, Pourhouse brings old-world drinking and dining back to life. The restaurant’s exposed brick and gold-leaf accents tell the story of a vintage speakeasy, and their menu is full of comfort food favourites that never disappoint. Offerings are hearty, with dishes such as their legendary Pourhouse burger. A potato bun is piled with dry-aged beef, confit pork belly, cheddar, caramelized onions, and grainy mustard mayo. Without a doubt, it’s one of the best burgers in the city. You can even add foie gras if you’re feeling fancy.
Namos Estiatorio - East Van
A quick 15-minute Uber from downtown lands you in East Van, where you’ll find the closest thing to Greece without needing a passport. Namos Estiatorio serves up family-style Mediterranean comfort dishes meant for sharing. Think hearty moussaka, lemony Greek salad with giant slabs of feta, grilled seafood delicacies, and decadent desserts like loukoumades (Greek donut balls dipped in honey syrup and walnuts).
Their signature cocktail offerings feature unique Mediterranean twists, such as herbal infusions and Greek Mountain Tea. The mocktail menu is just as thoughtful, with inclusions such as a zero-proof mezcal negroni.
The Acorn - Mount Pleasant
Another restaurant that has earned its flowers is the Michelin-recommended, vegetarian establishment, The Acorn. The ambiance is cozy and inviting, with unique features that reflect its plant-forward menu and celebration of the Pacific Northwest.
For $85 per person, indulge in a multi-course tasting menu built for sharing. As the seasons change, so does the menu. So you’ll enjoy fall’s harvest in every bite. Located in the heart of Mount Pleasant, it’s just a 15-minute drive from the downtown core.
Torafuku - Chinatown
A fall stroll through Chinatown isn’t complete without a stop at Torafuku, where sizzling woks and bowls of umami-rich noodles warm you up on even the chilliest of days. The restaurant’s flawless service and inventive menu have put it on the Michelin map and on every foodie’s radar.
Fan favourites include the seasonal fish crudo, General Tao fried chicken wings, and green curry halibut. Playful cocktails laced with yuzu or shio brighten the palate and are the perfect balance to the overcast skies on a typical Vancouver fall day.
Livia - Commercial Drive
Nestled in the heart of Vancouver's Little Italy is the neighbourhood’s most charming café, bakery, and wine bar, Livia. Warmth and care are woven into every detail here, from vintage servingware to rustic tables that feel comfortably lived-in. Grab a sourdough loaf from the bakery window, or gather around one of their wooden tables to enjoy an authentic Italian brunch with family and friends. Their menu rotates depending on what’s fresh and in season, but you can always count on their Italian cocktail offerings year-round. Our favourite refreshment? The Hazelnut Espresso Martini.
When comfort food cravings inevitably hit this fall, you’ll know where to go. So grab an umbrella and throw on your rain boots for a stroll through downtown, Kitsilano, or Commercial Drive. Let grey skies be the perfect excuse to head to a warm and cozy restaurant.
