Kids In Vancouver: Zoom Into Nano At Science World
Have you ever wondered how your nose can sense strong smells such as peppermint or bubblegum simply by taking a sniff of something smelly? Have you ever wanted to actually see the particles in the air that we breathe?
Head to Science World and check out their latest exhibit: Zoom Into Nano, a display that is sure to be a hit with future scientists and their science-loving companions. From now until January 2nd, visitors can explore the wondrous world of nano science through interactive activities and brain-busting displays that explore advances in nanotechnology and the tiny world that can’t be seen by the naked eye. Here are some things you’ll want to check out during your visit.
As you enter the exhibit, you’ll spot larger-than-life displays of atoms and molecules that are 100 million times their actual size, allowing guests to zoom in to tiny structures and devices and examine the details that lie deep within natural and manmade objects.
Check out small particles under a microscope
Sweep up a pile of colourful sand and take a close-up look at the tiny grains. You may just find a few little surprises under the microscope too!
Build a molecule
After reading about and viewing objects on a molecular scale, build your own molecules at this fun and interactive station. Select your atoms and chemical bonds, and create your own water or carbon dioxide molecules. Don’t worry if you need a little help, the activity table features pictures of popular molecules to help you along the way.
Stroll through a carbon nanotube
Walk amongst microscopic carbon nanotubes, and learn about how these tiny structures impact nanotechnology, electronics, optics, and other fields of science and technology. The kids won’t be the only ones who learn something new about these allotropes.
Note: this exhibit is best suited for kids 6+.
Enjoy a free day of fun at Science World
Throughout the month of October, enjoy a range of added events, demonstrations, and activities as Science World hosts its 6th annual Around The Dome Science Festival. The month-long celebration will explore the impact of science on the world around us. Thanks to BC Hydro, visitors can enjoy a FREE day of fun at Science World on Sunday, October 2nd (10am – 6pm).
