Today Vancouver welcomes a new month with the opening of a brand new space that is sure to encourage visitors to “just keep swimming”. Since 1978, the UBC Aquatic Centre has been a popular facility, fostering swimmers of all skill sets – from the first timers, to the leisurely lap poolers, to those training for the Olympics, and after almost 40 years, the aquatic hub has undergone a major facelift.

UBC will be celebrating the grand opening of the new aquatic centre with a weekend full of special events and family fun. Here are 3 reasons why now is the time to get your feet wet and join in on the fun festivities.

1) Tour the world-class facility.

Before the updates, the old UBC Aquatic Centre felt dark and drab, with its wood-panelled ceilings and dark tile flooring. Now, the new facility features a clean, modern, and classy look with white ceilings, walls and tiles that brighten up the space while letting in more natural light. Featuring 3 pools, a 34-person hot tub, a lazy river, a steam room, and a sauna, the new design has replaced the old-school space with the space to be for swimmers of all levels.

The new on-campus community space also brings fully-accessible features to the forefront with the addition of a universal change room, a wheelchair accessible lift into the hot tub, and 3 separate tanks that can operate at different temperatures to accommodate a wider range of programming options.

2) Enjoy the family-friendly festivities.

To celebrate the grand opening of the new space, UBC will be hosting a range of family-friendly activities featuring fun, food and giveaways, including the debut of the Wibit inflatable obstacle course, and a swim-up movie night where kids can splash and play while watching Finding Nemo from the 50-metre pool.

3) Swim and save with discounted rates.
