On August 19, Vancouver’s Our Cityride mass participation ride and festival will launch. The event was created to bring together communities to promote cycling as a family friendly and fun activity to empower people. It’s a chance to showcase the benefits of cycling for all ages and abilities as a fun way to stay active. The event was founded by Charmaine Crooks and Mark Ernsting.

“Mark and I are excited to bring our vision of an inclusive community focused ride and festival to life right in the heart of the city”, said Crooks.

The event is also committed to giving back to communities. “We look forward to supporting local initiatives and community programs to make an impact 365-days a year”, said Ernsting.

Our Cityride is a non-competitive, family-friendly ride and festival that has partnered with the City of Vancouver, the Vancouver Parks Board and other stakeholders to ensure the success of the inaugural event. The organizers see it as a great opportunity for the city to showcase itself, especially among other international and like-minded cities hosting similar mass participation rides.

“The City of Vancouver is committed to making cycling accessible for people of all ages and abilities. Our Cityride provides a fun, inclusive, family-friendly space to celebrate and encourage active living,” explained Vancouver mayor Gregor Robertson. “We’re excited to join cities like Montreal and London with our very own mass-participation ride and I am looking forward to seeing this new signature summer event grow in the years to come”

The ride will pass through several communities and local landmarks such as Gastown and Stanley Park. “Some of the best bike rides in the world are right here in our downtown parks, especially Stanley Park,” said Park Board chair Michael Wiebe. “We are delighted to support this first celebration of cycling and community. I’ll see you at Our Cityride.”

The Our Cityride International group ride presented by Holland will be an important part of the event.“The Dutch consulate in Vancouver are delighted that Our Cityride is on, and we’ll do our utmost to help make it a success,” said consulate general of the Netherlands, Gert Heijkoop. “We are mobilizing the Dutch community in the greater Vancouver area to participate and we are working with our colleagues from other Consulates to give Our Cityride an international flavour. We believe bikes are the future for cities.”

David Lam Park in Yaletown will act as the festival venue with the entertainment stage, a kids zone with obstacle courses and learn to ride acitivies, an expo area, a beer garden, food trucks and bike valet. Festivities will commense at 3 pm with the ride startin on Pacific Blvd. at 5 pm. The festival will continue until 9 pm.

The events course will be announced in the coming weeks. Visit ourcityride.com for more information. If you are interested in volunteering or partnering with Our Cityride contact info@ourcityride.com.
