January brings with it cold, snowy weather that inspires some of us to hightail it to local ski hills and others to hunker down under warm covers and hibernate ‘til spring. This winter, the Rio Theatre is offering another option: haul yourself out of bed and settle in at the theatre for a full day’s binging of Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings Trilogy.

The theatre is hosting two showings of the series, the first on Saturday, January 6 (note advance tickets are sold out, though you can show up at the theatre and try for door tickets) and the second on Sunday, January 21. Truly a marathon, the films will be shown back-to-back on the big screen in their entirety – the best way to piece the entire story together in one seamless grand adventure.

Attendees are encouraged to dress up as their favourite LOTR character (Gollum, anyone?), though given the epic length of each film you might opt for comfy threads instead. Expect plenty of trivia, games, prizes, bad (and good!) LOTR jokes, and more. Doors for each event open at 10.30am, and we recommend arriving early to claim a good seat (and claim pre-show goodies). Note that the seating for January 6 is entirely 19+ for entry and bar service. Minors are permitted on January 21, though must be seated in the balcony. Tickets cost $20 (advance) and $25 (door). Those who can’t face an entire day in the theatre, or who have gold rings to hunt, can purchase single movie tickets for $12 (only available at the door).
