The March edition of The Dance Centre’s popular Discover Dance! series features the young collective Immigrant Lessons. The group has quite the CV: notable performances include Pattern Nation, Sleepless Mindz, Ted Talk, Junofest, Basscoast Music Festival, Shambhala Music Festival, Vines Art Festival, Vancouver Street Dance Festival, and New Works, as well as collaborations with the Juno Award-winning hip-hop act A Tribe Called Red and Juno-nominated Shad.
You can see the group on March 5 in two performances, at noon and 6:30 p.m. Find out more about Immigrant Lessons below.
Immigrant Lessons’ mash-up of styles include street dance, hip hop, Dancehall, Afrobeat and more. According to a media release, they “tell stories of first- and second-generation immigrants, navigating Canadian culture and facing questions of identity and belonging. Audiences will be taken on an emotional journey through curiosity, struggle, and love.”
Professional dancers Kevin Fraser and Alyssa Amarshi formed the dance/art collective to promote cultural pluralism through dance, music, fashion, media, and visual design. The collective’s work explores themes such as sexual orientation and gender identity, feminism, racial discrimination, cultural erasure, masculinity, and mental illness. Immigrant Lessons aims to create more opportunities for people of colour and marginalized communities in dance, stage performance, film, urban performance, concert dance, and community development.
