Six artists to check out at ArtBreakers Illustration Market 2018

Vancouver is fortunate to be home to many animation, gaming, and movie studios. That means we have a lot of artists who work at those studios and, in their off-time, create their own porjects.

Now in its second year, ArtBreakers Illustration Market is a two-day exhibit of work meant to highlight work by some of these artists. This year, over 40 illustrators, concept designers, comics artists and illustrators, many based in Vancouver, will attend. Many will debut and sell original prints, books, shirts, bags and enamel pins.

The Market takes place at the Heritage Hall, 3102 Main St., Sept. 22-23 and is open (and free) to the public. Here are a few of the more than 40 artists scheduled to attend.

Tony Cliff—A 13-year veteran of the animation industry, Cliff is also the creator of his long- running comic book series, Delilah Dirk. Graphic novels featuring the character have made it onto the New York Times Bestsellers list and been nominated for comic industry awards, including Shuster, Harvey, and Eisner awards. The newest installment, Delilah Dirk and the Pillars of Hercules, was published earlier this month.

Art director/visual development artist Alexia Tryfon will be a guest at this year’s Arbreakers Illustrators Market. Art by Alexia Tryfon, ‘Saturday Morning Cartoons’.

Rebecca Dart—Another vet of the local animation industry, Dart has worked on shows such as Mission Hill, Ned’s Newt and My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. Among her independent works is the comic

Ben Duncan—The Vancouver-based artist works in comics, illustrations and sculpture. His story “Blane Throttle” was featured in the Best American Comics Anthology series in 2015 and in 2017 for his self-published Ball Means 1 collection.

Simon Roy—Roy specializes in comics, with intricate, meticulous attention paid to world building and character design. He is best known for his work on titles such as Prophet, Jan’s Atomic Heart, The Field, Tiger Lung, and Habitat.

Alexia Tryfon—An art director and a visual development artist in (what else) the animation industry, Tryfon is currently working for the Australian studio Animal Logic. Her work can also be seen in last year’s My Little Pony: The Movie.

Pam Wishbow—The Seattle-based Wishbow “uses processes inspired by printmaking to create illustrations and products that are often inspired by the weird and spooky things in life,” according to her ArtBreakers.ca bio.
