Nothing says Spring like strolling through rainbow-coloured rows upon rows of perfectly-pruned perennials, and the Abbotsford Tulip Festival is the perfect spot to do just that.

No longer a drive-through destination, Abbotsford has grown and flourished into a bustling community of its own, worth the hour-long drive from downtown Vancouver to experience the plentiful perks that the Fraser Valley town has to offer. Here’s how to have the perfect Spring day, just an hour away.

Grab your camera, pack a picnic, and start your day with a frolic in the flowers at the Abbotsford Tulip Festival.

Celebrating their Dutch heritage, the Warmerdam family planted their roots in the Fraser Valley in 1950, and applied their horticultural knowledge and fervour for farming to their 10 acres of pristine land. Launched by the granddaughter of the land’s first family settler, the 1st annual Abbotsford Tulip Festival celebrates the beauty of the famous Dutch flower.

Stroll through the well-groomed crops of tulips, daffodils, gladiolus and peonies, and snap swoon-worthy photos on the colourful benches, or behind the playful cut-out photo boards.

After a tiptoe through the tulips, head over to the U-Pick Field, and handpick a bunch of the beautiful blooms to take home with you. Then, grab a seat in the undercover picnic area and enjoy a leisurely lunch while gazing at the 10-acres of colour that stretches along the horizon.

Kids can enjoy a wide range of family-friendly activities, including a play on the hay bale playground, a dig in the large sandbox, or a fun game of tether ball. The farm also hosts duck races, and a variety of food trucks (weekends only).

Whether you’re stopping by on your drive through town, or making a day of it, a visit to the family-run farm is a must during the Spring months.
