Vancouverites won’t be surprised to hear it: Vancouver has just been selected as one of National Geographic's picks for their BEST OF THE WORLD 2026 list.

The world-famous magazine and media brand has released their annual guide to the 25 most awe-inspiring, must-visit destinations for the upcoming year, and we’re proud to hold a spot on the list. While B.C. destinations like Tofino and Haida Gwaii have been highlighted in previous years, this is the first time the city of Vancouver has ever made it onto the list.

After a thorough research process, Vancouver was selected as one of the BEST OF THE WORLD by National Geographic’s team of travel experts (dream job alert!) and Nat Geo Traveller’s international editorial teams, which serve millions of readers globally. Rubbing shoulders on the list with Rwandan safaris, Pittsburgh museums, and the Zao mountains of Japan, Vancouver’s attractions fit right in with the best that the world has to offer.

The list is designed to inspire travellers to visit the top, most immersive places on the planet while connecting with their unique cultures, geographies, and communities.

Given the fact that this year, National Geographic is emphasizing deeper connections with nature, awe-inspiring natural wonders, and sustainable travel, it makes sense that our green city would stand out. When outdoor experiences are just a few steps away from the city sidewalk at any given moment, we understand why our beaches, forests, mountain tops, and destination gardens consistently attract international attention. After all, there are truly endless ways to get outside here.

We also love that National Geographic puts together their list with both seasoned explorers and first-time adventurers in mind. Whether it’s ziplining at Grouse Mountain or a family-friendly day spent with the kids in Kits, we’ve got you covered.

And when it comes to connecting with culture and community, well, Vancouver’s an obvious choice, too. There’s so much to explore and learn about when it comes to Indigenous Culture in Vancouver, and the city’s vibrant diversity means that there are always new global eats to try out or cultural festivals to attend.

Finally, as the Nat Geo team has pointed out, one huge reason to visit Vancouver in 2026 is that it will be the best place to catch the FIFA World Cup.

We’re so honoured to have earned a place on one of the world’s most definitive lists of places to visit. Plus, a little moment of Canadian pride, audiences have named our neighbour in Alberta, Banff, as the Reader’s Choice winner this year!
