Initially, the Chinese community arrived to work in mines and on the Trans-Canada railway. Centered in the heart of downtown, this historic area is eight blocks East-West (Taylor Street to Gore Avenue) and 5 blocks North-South (Union to Pender).
In 2011, Vancouver’s Chinatown was designated an official National Historic Site of Canada.
Chinatown is a blend of the traditional and the contemporary, where Asian specialty stores and dim sum restaurants coexist with modern boutiques. Sidewalks are lined with an array of goods, from herbal medicines to silk garments.
