The Well Behaved Woman: A Mennonite Musical
Overview
The Well Behaved Woman: A Mennonite Musical
Step into a powerful, decades-spanning story of feminism, identity, and womanism in The Well Behaved Woman; an original musical. Written, composed, directed, and performed by sisters Katrina McCarthy and Robyn Froese, this two-woman production blends rich storytelling with unforgettable music.
Beginning in 1923 in rural Manitoba, the show traces the remarkable life of Anne Friesen as she navigates the expectations and realities of being a Mennonite woman in Canada across generations. Told in six compelling acts, Anne’s journey unfolds with humor, heartbreak, and defiance in the face of the changing climate around her.
Originally conceived as an innovative podcast musical (available on all major podcast platforms), this production transforms audio storytelling into a vibrant theatrical experience.
Supported by the Canadian Mennonite Magazine’s MennoCreative Artist Residency Program, The Well Behaved Woman celebrates artistic courage and cultural heritage in equal measure.
Warning: This musical is a work of fiction. Any resemblance to actual grandmothers—past or present—or real events is entirely, delightfully intentional.
