Ballet BC is back this weekend – so catch them while you can – and so is the Easter Train, Earth Hour, the Portobello West market, a Feminist Road show, and lots of things to bring the children to.

In this 30th anniversary season it seemed fitting to commission a new work – his first full-length – from a choreographer who has had tremendous impact on both Ballet Bc artists and audiences.

Circus Without Borders

What: Hailing from opposite ends of the Earth, two world-class acrobats—Guillaume Saladin and Yamoussa Bangoura—work towards the same goal: to use the art form of the circus to instill hope in the youth who languish in the impoverished communities the artists once called home. Nimbly shuttling us between Nunavut and Guinea, Susan Gray’s uplifting documentary invites us to marvel as these men, whose athleticism is only exceeded by their altruism, guide the most marginalized of youth from their first tentative backflips to centre stage at the Vancouver Olympics and Cavalia.

What: Enjoy nature at night. Stroll 2 km of lantern-lit trails featuing owls, squirrels, coyotes and more. Then cozy up to the campfire with a hot chocolate. Bring a lantern, flashlight or headlamp and allow 1 hour to complete the quest. Bring a mug to use at the Girl Guides concession. OWL will be attending with some feathered friends for everyone to meet. The walk is stroller and wheelchair accessible.

What: For 2016 the eight-week awareness campaign began on Martin Luther King’s birthday on January 15th and culminates on March 19th, with a giant mural painting event. Elected officials, community leaders and the public will be asked to dip their hands in paint and add their handprint to a giant mural which represents the many ethnicities of the people of Canada and the world.

Where: Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden
What: Roxsane K. Tiernan’s “Nature’s Garden” exhibit is a beautiful combination of acrylics and Chigiri-e depicting snapshots of nature. Her mixed media approach captures and enlivens each scene offering a story of escape and peace through nature and colour. Roxsane began learning and experimenting with Chigiri-e, a Japanese torn paper collage technique in 1984.

What: Tyler’s second show with the Back Gallery Project is giving us a fresh take on the expressionist tradition. Again his strength as a colourist is evident. A dynamic sense of composition using cut-up and chance elements from still life, masks and skulls nudges the mind to consider our mortality and is just enough to recognize the artists mature thought.

Taiwan’s urban and rural life cycles are filled with rituals and ceremonies of various faiths ranging from Buddhism, Daoism and Confucianism to Christianity, Chinese folk religions and animistic beliefs of Taiwan’s Aboriginal peoples. While religion affects, challenges and intermingles with the secular world, myths, legends and fairytales add other layers to the spiritual world of Taiwan.

What: In response to mounting concern about a rapidly changing region, this exhibit will immerse visitors in an experience that spotlights 20 visions for tomorrow’s city, while focusing on four topical issues: housing affordability, residential density, ease of transportation, and quality of public space.

What: Exploring how artists incorporate found images, objects, sounds and words into their work, starting with the movement’s emergence at the turn of the twentieth century and showing how it has become a dominant force in our world today. It will feature 371 works by 156 artists, filmmakers, architects, musicians and designers, such as Pablo Picasso, Marcel Duchamp, Juan Gris, Hannah Höch, Joseph Cornell, Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, Nam June Paik, Jean-Luc Goddard, Frank Gehry, Dara Birnbaum, Stan Douglas, Hito Steyerl, Isa Genzken, DJ Spooky and Tobias Wong, among many others.

In the Footprint of the Crocodile Man

What: The Sepik River of Papua New Guinea is one of the largest river systems in the world, extraordinarily beautiful, but seldom visited. It is here that the Iatmul people, who live along its banks, have created internationally renowned works of art primarily inspired by stories of the majestic crocodile as the primordial creator. This unique exhibition will showcase the most comprehensive collection of contemporary Sepik art in North America for the first time. In addition to highlighting the exquisite carvings of Papua New Guinea’s latmul people, the exhibition will delve into their economic, cultural, and spiritual connections to the river system, drawing urgent attention to the logging and mining operations that pose environmental threats to the region.
