In the international phenomenon Literary Death Match, writers are pitted against each other and judged according literary merit, performance and “intangibles.” The competition is returning to Vancouver to present four local wordsmiths, who will read from their works and vie for the crown of… well, Literary Death Match champ.

The latest Vancouver iteration takes place this Friday, Nov. 4 at the Fox Cabaret (2321 Main St.). Let’s take a look at the competitors.

Aaron Chapman is a musician, historian and award-winning author of Live at the Commodore and, most recently, The Last Gang in Town, a non-fiction account of street gangs in New York in the 1970s.

Lucia Misch is a poet, musician, and arts educator. Jayson McDonaldis a prize-winning theatre performer. And Susin Nielsen is the award-winning author of Word Nerd, Dear George Clooney: Please Marry My Mom, and a writer for the esteemed Canadian TV series Degrassi Junior High.

Sara Bynoe is one of the judges of Literary Death Match, a contest that pits local writers against each other. Literary Death Match takes place this Friday night (Nov. 4) at the Fox Cabaret.

They will each have seven minutes (or less). The two finalists of the first rounds compete in the finale.

Judges include Rachel Hartman, award-winning/NY Times best-selling author of the Young Adult fantasy novels Seraphina and Shadow Scale; Sara Bynoe, comedic performer, writer, host, actor and producer; and Graham Clark, a three-time Canadian Comedy Award nominee and co-host of Maximum Fun’s Stop Podcasting Yourself.

Adrian Todd Zuniga is flying in from London, England to host. Zuniga is the creator of the event, which has been held in over 60 cities worldwide. The show starts at 8 p.m., with doors at 7. Tickets are $12 in advance (at eventbrite.com) and $15 at the door.
