Vancouver’s biggest free art show coming up at Emily Carr University

Vancouver’s biggest free art exhibition returns May 4-19. The Emily Carr University annual grad show, aka The Show, features original works by more than 300 graduating art students from the world-renowned art school. Work is by graduating students from across the school’s degree programs, including Fine Arts, Design, and Media Arts. The work will be exhibited on all four floors of the campus.

While much of the work is viewable during university hours, other presentations are by RSVP. They are:

Media Installations and films made by 2D + Experimental Animation, 3D Computer Animation and Film/Video + Integrated Media graduates (May 5) and the Best of Animation + Film/Video Showcase (May 8 & 9). The last is a curated screening of films from 2019 graduates, from dramatic and documentary to experimental and the abstract.

In addition to The Show, Emily Carr University’s spring convocation at the May 4 grad ceremony will recognize three leaders in North America’s art and design community. They include Vancouver contemporary artist Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun Lets’lo:tseltun, Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Mellon University head of design Terry Irwin, and Vancouver Island resident, artist and activist Marianne Nicolson. Nicolson will receive the Emily Award, which honours outstanding achievement by distinguished university alumni. Irwin is being recognized for “challenging design assumptions through a new area of study called Transition Design, which calls for more openness and mindfulness for a more sustainable future,” according to the press release.

Opening Night of The Show is Friday, May 3 from 5-10 pm.
