Fall, the season of crunchy leaves, pumpkin spice, cozy dinners and lots of yummy soups.

As the air cools off and nature starts to crisp up around us, we naturally transition from the light and bright meals of summer to the warm, hearty, soul-soothing bowls of fall.

And lucky for us, there’s no better place to sip, slurp and savour your way through all sorts of soups than in Vancouver. Beyond our legendary ramen and hotpot scene also lies a landscape of creamy chowders, bubbling French onions, elevated takes on chicken noodle and warm-and-fuzzy-inducing tomato bisques.

So, to all the certified slurpers, you’re in the right place. These are the best places for soup in Vancouver this fall.

Burgoo Bistro | Downtown, Mount Pleasant, Point Grey, North Vancouver

Two delicious soups at Burgoo Bistro in Vancouver.
Burgoo in Vancouver.

When you think cozy dinner, think Burgoo. This place is a staple for a good soup and sandwich (or salad) combo, specializing in comfort food served in an equally comforting atmosphere.

Old-world, countryside-style ambiance complements a menu of soul-warming classics. The soups include a decadent French onion, lobster bisque, mushroom medley with truffle and an herb cream broth, straight-up tomato with red wine, and a sunset corn and chicken with cumin chipotle cream. Not to mention the salads, sandwiches and other comfort food staples like a lobster mac and cheese, brown butter pierogies and a brie fondue. Drooling yet?

Even the name is on theme. Burgoo was plucked from Stews, Bogs and Burgoos, a book the founders checked out from the Vancouver Public Library. It doesn’t get much more soup-obsessed (or more Vancouver) than that.

The Stock Market | Granville Island

Two bikers pass the Granville Island building in Vancouver.
Granville Island, Vancouver.

It’s all in the name with this one. The Stock Market sits right in the heart of Granville Island’s Public Market.

Fresh, locally sourced ingredients take center stage here, with classics like green split pea with rosemary and orange, Manhattan smoked wild salmon chowder, and real chicken noodle soup, plus many (seriously, so many) more options to enjoy hot at the market, take home, or both, so you can relive the slurping all over again.

The Stock Market also sells their stocks, along with butters, dressings and sauces to go. The perfect edible souvenir from your visit.

The Soup Meister’s Nephew | North Vancouver

For nearly 27 years, Ralf Dauns, better known as the “Soup Meister,” was the king of the soup hill on Vancouver’s North Shore, ladling out steaming bowls of deliciousness from his legendary spot in Lower Lonsdale’s Quay Market.

After his passing in 2022, many worried it would mark the end of a neighbourhood staple. But his nephew, Evan Paul, picked up the ladle and reopened as The Soup Meister’s Nephew, carrying on his uncle’s legacy.

Today, the focus remains on locally sourced, handmade soups, with strong ties to small suppliers whenever possible. The menu offers new spins on the classics, four to five hot soups on deck daily, plus cold soups to go (or even delivered), all served up with that unmistakable family-business warmth.

Jack’s Chowder | South Vancouver, Downtown

Chowder people, perk up. For a crowd-pleasing, New England-style chowder, consider this institution your north star.

Served with crackling bacon ends, dill and oyster crackers, this creamy concoction was crafted by true chowder lovers with travel-tested taste buds. For the full experience, go all in with the sourdough bread bowl, extra bacon ends and a drizzle of lobster oil. You’ll be transported to the wharfside in a heartbeat.

Currently tucked into South Vancouver at Fraser St. and 41st, Jack’s Chowder is just a quick Uber or transit ride from downtown. And soon, with a new location opening in Fall 2025 at Bentall Centre downtown, the creamy comfort of Jack’s will be even easier to find right in the city core.

Liquids + Solids | East Vancouver

With two cafes in East Vancouver serving up a rotating menu of hot soups amongst pot pies, grilled sandwiches, fresh salads and other goodies, Liquids + Solids is a go-to spot for hearty classics.

Craving a spicy chicken chilli? Or maybe the true comfort classic, beef barley? Those are the kinds of bowls you’ll find here, only a five-minute drive from downtown.

Rodney’s Oyster House | Yaletown

If your love of soup rivals your love of seafood, Rodney’s is the place for you. Coastal flavour. Maritime flair. Rodney’s is a spot, not only for its dishes, but also for the unforgettable energy they’re served with, in the heart of lively Yaletown.

Using fresh, locally and sustainably sourced ingredients that represent the ocean, Rodney’s crafts both New England and Manhattan-style clam chowders in the heart of Yaletown that’ll bring the table to a hush in the best way.

And if you’re looking to round out your chowder, you won’t be short on options. There’s a full menu for oysters, plus other mouth-watering mainstays like steak and crab sliders, mussels, seafood pastas, seared scallops and an indulgent lobster ragu.

There you have it, creamy chowders, soul-soothing stocks and a lot of locally-sourced BC goodness. So grab your bibs and get ready to slurp your way through Vancouver’s best places for soup this fall (or at least as many as possible).
