One of the upsides to all of this snow is the justificationto eat rich, belly warming chowder until the wintry chill subsides.

In the spirit of this February soup love, the Vancouver Aquarium is holding their annual Ocean Wise Seafood Chowder Chowdown. Tickets are almost gone so don’t delay!

On Thursday, February 21, 2019 at 7pm, the Vancouver Aquarium invites those who adore a good bowl of chowder to take part in the 11th Ocean Wise Seafood Chowder Chowdown.

Get your palate ready for a wondrous night in celebration ofsustainable seafood and top notch local cooking. Culinary stars will becompeting to be the 2019 champion, which will be determined by an industry andmedia panel. You as guests will also have the opportunity to vote for thePeople’s Choice Award.

This adults-only event gives you access to samplings of 14amazing chowders from top chefs who will be leveraging their talents andcreativity in order to produce the best bowlfuls of seafood goodness.

The line-up includes Chef Matt Marshall from Coquille who will be serving celery root and shellfish chowder; Chef Welbert Choi from Forage who will be dishing up hand shredded BBQ duck and Berezan shrimp chowder with Dungeness crab and shrimp toast; and Chef Jason Labahn from Honey Salt who will be cooking BC wild sidestripe shrimp chowder; and Chef Will Lew from Notch8, Fairmont Hotel Vancouver who will be creating the playful Arctic Char’der. Also look forward to soup from top culinary wizards like Ned Bell from Ocean Wise, Anthony Marzo from Arc at Fairmont Waterfront (saffron and fregola chowder), and Josh Gonneau from Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts (crab, swimming scallops, and corn chowder).

In the past, the chowders have all been incredibly unique, making for a different eating experience each time. Some come with small accompaniments; others really play with textures; while still others incorporate spices and other non-seafood ingredients to create interesting flavour combinations. Chefs aim to showcase the flavours of the seafood, evidencing the quality, freshness, and nuance of local ingredients that are truly worth sustaining.

Each chowder will be paired with a local BC beer, from breweries such as Steel and Oak Brewing, Driftwood Brewery, and Fuggles and Warlock Craftworks. Judges will, in addition, award best chowder and beer pairing. Other spirits, wine, and drinks will be on offer, from companies like Wayward Distillation House, Salt Spring Coffee, and Arterra Wines.

Like any after hours Vancouver Aquarium event, you will be able to explore and mingle in the various spectacular aquarium galleries, making for an incredibly beautiful and atmospheric night.

All proceeds for the event go towards Ocean Wise, a sustainable seafood program whose mandate is to help preserve the bounty and diversity of ocean life.
