Where Memories Live

Where Memories Live
Overview
THIS Gallery is honoured to present Where Memories Live, a two-artist exhibition featuring new work by two Ukrainian immigrant artists, Jennifer Anoruie and Kateryna Kostelna—whose practices navigate memory, displacement, and the fragile act of rebuilding belonging. Through paintings and symbolic assemblages, the exhibition reflects on the creation of an “inner home”. A space shaped not by geography, but by lived experience, cultural inheritance, and the small rituals that tether us to ourselves.
Immigration unravels the familiar. Language, customs, routines, even the scent of the air shift into the unknown. In the instability of such change, we search instinctively for what remains recognizable. What disappears in the physical world becomes reconstructed internally. A private cartography where fragments of the past and the textures of the present converge. This is not sentimentality. It is a method of survival, a way of remaining whole when the external world has broken open.
For both artists, leaving Ukraine was not an option but an urgent necessity. A crossing made in search of safety amid the violence of war. Their work, while distinct, shares a profound interrogation of memory as both burden and anchor.
Join us on Saturday, February 7, from 2–6 PM to celebrate the exhibition and meet the artists. There will be an exhibition tour and artist talk at 2 pm.
