Episode 6: The Price
In The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 6, Joel returns once more in a series of flashbacks that shed light on his relationship with Ellie and his past. Filming returns again to Squamish with large sections also filmed on Mount Seymour, outside of Vancouver.
The episode opens with a flashback to Joel’s childhood and an intense confrontation as he protects his younger brother Tommy from their violent father. Jumping forward, it’s Ellie’s 16th birthday Joel leads her through the woods (filmed in Mount Seymour) to a clearing with a life-sized model of a Tyrannosaurus rex. From there they explore the fictional Wyoming Museum of Science and History where Ellie climbs inside a space capsule and blasts off in her imagination. This is the happiest we see Joel and Ellie in this episode (and maybe ever).
Flash forward again to Ellie’s 19th birthday and Joel has decided she’s old enough to go on her first patrol. It’s supposed to be a routine patrol with little action, but Joel gets a call on the radio from another patrol that needs assistance. By the time Joel and Ellie get there it’s too late. They find Eugene there, already bit. He begs Joel to let him see his wife, Gail, before he dies, but Joel thinks it’s too dangerous to bring him back to Jackson. The final flashback brings us forward again to the night before Joel dies. Ellie confronts Joel on the porch and Joel finally reveals the dark truth about what he really did at the end of season one.

Mount Seymour
The woodland scenes filmed in this episode, including the one where Ellie climbs a dinosaur, were filmed on Mount Seymour—one of three beloved local mountains in Vancouver. Less than a 45-minute drive from downtown Vancouver, this alpine escape offers sweeping views, winding forest trails, and a wilderness vibe that feels far from the city. If you're making the trip, pack your boots and head out on the Dog Mountain trail for a short hike with a serious payoff.
For the scenes filmed later in the episode, the production team used fog machines to give the mountain a more atmospheric feel—making it the perfect backdrop for the dramatic confrontation between Joel and Eugene. Come in the winter for a cozy ski and snowboard destination, or in the summer for scenic hiking trails that lead to lookouts with incredible views over the city. Either way, get ready to breathe in the fresh mountain air and imagine how this peaceful setting transformed into something a little more haunting on screen.
Britannia Beach, Squamish
We once again return to the Jackson settlement in this episode, which was built and filmed in Squamish, a scenic town just an hour north of Vancouver. Known as the "Outdoor Recreation Capital of Canada," Squamish offers stunning mountain views, dense forests, and crystal-clear glacial rivers—perfectly capturing the wild beauty of The Last of Us. It's also an ideal day trip from Vancouver, making it a must-visit destination for anyone seeking an outdoor adventure.
Back in Jackson, we get a deeper look into Joel and Ellie’s relationship before the tragic events of Episode 2. Unfortunately you won’t be able to visit this location since the town was built from scratch for filming, but you can visit the nearby Britannia Mine Museum which was used as the set for an abandoned mine in the second episode of the season. While you’re there, take a ride on the Sea-to-Sky Gondola and experience stunning views of the town, the Stawamus Chief Mountain, Howe Sound, and the coastal rainforest below.
