It’s All Downhill From Here – Mountain Biking on Vancouver’s North Shore

While skiers and boarders passionately carve out every last turn on the North Shore, local mountain bike enthusiasts are watching the ever-rising snow level with bated breath! Yes, spring is in the air, and with that comes the ever popular Mountain Biking season. The change of seasons means outdoor enthusiasts are trading in their boards for wheels and migrating to the extensive trail system on Mount Fromme, Cypress Mountain and Mount Seymour.

To describe me as a “newbie” mountain biker would be an insult to all beginners. However, I am fascinated, and a little envious, of the skilled riders who regularly embark on trails like Crinkum Crankum and the Skull. Spellbound, I find myself in awe as I observe the converted climbing the narrow trails with a leg-burning and lung-crushing intensity. Muddy, sweaty, battered and sometimes bruised, these adventurous risk-takers drop in and tackle rickety bridges, ramps, jumps and plenty of frightening hair-raising steep descents. Fortunately, and at the risk of sounding cliché, the North Shore trail system offers up something for everyone, even someone like me. No matter your fitness level, you can find a local trail to suit your ability.

Equally impressive to the extensive trail system and skilled riders who frequent the area, is the volunteer core; the heart of the North Shore Mountain Bike Association. Dedicated to caring for a sustainable trail network, these cycling enthusiasts and trail stewards invest countless hours building and maintaining this world-class network of paths. Dare I say; community spirit is alive and well on Mount Fromme! And I quote, “Trails for All, Trails for Forever.” Could not have said it better myself!
