Film Venue Spotlight: Britannia Mine Museum

Film Venue Spotlight: Britannia Mine Museum
Situated just off the scenic Sea to Sky Highway, Britannia Mine Museum benefits not only from stunning surroundings – across the way is sparkling Howe Sound backgrounded by the majestic Coastal Mountains – but also a colourful setting that has captivated producers, directors and other production influencers for years. Fans of superheroes and the supernatural will recognize the venue playing an atmospheric background in hits like Supernatural, The Flashand The 100, as well as making an appearance in the premiere episode of Amazing Race Canada (July 2018).
Visiting the mine in person will jog your memory about its role in key scenes on the big and small screens, though the wealth of activities available stretches far beyond film tourism. The National Heritage Site offers historical machinery and heritage buildings to explore, an underground mine train tour, gold panning and the fascinating 1908 Machine Shop. Younger fry will appreciate the giant sand pit and playground boat, while the entire family will want to snap selfies on nearby Britannia Beach.
Currently, the mine plays host to “BOOM!”, a multisensory live action experience showcasing the fascinating history of Mill No. 3. The experience involves multiple screens, more than 30 speakers and special effects that combine to bring the mill rumbling back to life. Guests are also encouraged to visit the Howe Sounds Deck viewing area, where the journey begins on the lower deck with an immersive photo display showcasing Britannia Beach’s colourful history. After soaking in the awe-inspiring scale of the mine from a perfect vantage point, visitors can ascend to the upper deck to check out panoramic views of Howe Sound and learn about Britannia Beach’s intriguing environmental story.
