Metabolism-boosting activities to enjoy in Vancouver

We tend to (over)indulge over the holiday season, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. But our bodies feel it — and there’s no time like the present to reincorporate some healthy habits. Here are some easy and fun metabolism-boosting activities to enjoy in Vancouver.
Until February 5, 2021, in line with the public health order issued on November 20, non-essential travel into and out of BC is not recommended. BC residents let’s do our part by continuing to stay local and support local, with your immediate household or bubble, in accordance with the latest guidelines.

Take a stroll or run in the rain (or snow)
Our city is called Raincouver for a reason, and research has shown that “energy demand increases when running in cold conditions.” Plain English? You burn more fat and calories when doing physical activity in a cold, wet environment than in a warm environment. So not only do you get happy endorphins from running or walking the Seawall in the rain, you get more physical results!

Hit the slopes and hills
As stated above, you burn more calories when you get active in cold weather. Vancouverites do not lack in winter outdoor activities, and some great calorie-burners include:
- Snowshoeing (an excellent and very fun calorie-burner!)
- Snowboarding

Go for brunch
Traditional Chinese Medicine encourages the practice of eating warm foods in the winter — particularly in the morning. Warm, healthy foods, well, they warm us up and can better stimulate our circulation, promote better digestion, and help our bodies better metabolize after digestion. So your hot oatmeal at home or the breakfast hash bowl with poached eggs at your favourite brunch spot are helping you out. A definite win!

If possible, avoid alcohol
I’m not trying to be a killjoy, but alcohol adds calories, and can slow down the energy-burning functionality of your body — which can make us feel sluggish. (For those looking at Dry January, you may see a boost in your metabolism and energy.) Some excellent non-alcoholic beverages you can enjoy around the city (at most breweries and restaurants) include kombucha and cold-pressed juice. And if Dry January isn’t your thing, consider swapping sugary cocktails for red wine with your healthy takeout.
Hydrate
It’s very important to keep hydrated all year round, but cold weather can be especially drying. Our bodies need to stay hydrated in order to better digest and metabolize, particularly with all the lovely food and beverage being consumed during the festive season. Make sure to get in your eight cups a day.

Get more rest
Sure, we need to stay active, but making sure to get enough sleep is an overall healthy habit. Research has shown that too little sleep can restrict metabolism, so if you’re able, consider going to bed an hour earlier or waking up an hour later. Or… take a staycation! There’s nothing quite like sleeping on your own bed, but a change of scenery can be incredibly relaxing.
