The filming of two major Hollywood films get underway today, while a post-apocalyptic sci-fi TV series also gets going on filming its latest season.

But before we get to all of that, did you hear that massive boom the other week?

No, we’re not talking about the Celebration of Light fireworks.

That was the Rock, a.k.a. Dwayne Johnson, landing in Vancouver.

Johnson certainly made his presence known when he proclaimed Vancouver as one of his most favourite cities in the world (even despite smoke from B.C. wildfires).

He’s here filming the blockbuster Skyscraper, which commences production today (August 14) and runs until November 17.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is in Vancouver shooting the action-thriller Skyscraper.

Directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber (We’re the Millers), this action-thriller stars Johnson as a security professional who assesses highrises. While on assignment in China, he’s framed for a fire that starts in one of the world’s tallest buildings.

He goes on the run, trying to figure out who is behind the blaze while also attempting to rescue his family who is trapped within the burning structure.

Thurber and Johnson previously teamed up on the 2016 action-comedy Central Intelligence (co-starring Kevin Hart).

Joining the international cast is Canadian star Neve Campbell (House of Cards) and Singaporean star Chin Han (Ghost in the Shell), along with Pablo Schreiber, Byron Mann, Hannah Quinlivan, Elfina Luk, and Byron Lawson.

The film, which will also have filming locations in China, will be released in July 2018.

At the same time elsewhere in the city, the feature film with the working title of Untitled Robert Zemeckis Project also starts shooting today and will wrap up on October 19.

It’s based on the 2010 documentary Marwencol about Mark Hogancamp, a man who was emerged from a coma after five men attacked him outside a bar.

Left with brain damage and unable to afford therapy, Hogancamp built a model of a Second World War town in Belgium and populates it with dolls, calling it Marwencol.

This adaptation, directed by Robert Zemeckis (The Polar Express), will star Steve Carrell, who received critical acclaim for showing his serious side in the 2014 drama Foxcatcher, as Hogancamp.

On the home screen side of things, The 100 starts production on Season 5 today, and will film 13 episodes until January 29.

This sci-fi TV series follows a group of juvenile prisoners who are sent back to earth to repopulate it after a nuclear apocalypse has devastated the planet.

The cast include Eliza Taylor, Paige Turco, Bob Morley, Marie Avgeropoulos, Henry Ian Cusick, Christopher Larkin, Lindsey Morgan, Isaiah Washington, and Richard Harmon.

The fifth season will be broadcast in February 2018.

Meanwile, two feature films that wrapped up are Hong Kong filmmaker Calvin Poon’s Fatal Visit, which filmed from July 18 to August 11, and Summer of 84, which shot from July 10 to August 10 and was directed by François Simard, Anouk Whissell, and Yoann-Karl Whissell.

That’s all for this week but there’ll be plenty more in store next week to divulge about what’s shooting on the streets of Hollywood North.
