In June, over 7,000 people from around the globe will attend the Women Deliver Conference, the world’s largest conference on gender equality.  A few colleagues from the Vancouver Convention Centre spearheaded an industry fundraiser to raise money to cover registration fees for some of the women working at organizations in the Downtown Eastside that support and advocate for women living in this part of our city.

The original goal was to raise enough to send five people to the conference. With the support of over 100 people from the hospitality community, enough funds were raised to send 12 people!  As a result, these important Downtown Eastside organizations will be able send a staff member in addition to a ‘peer staff’ – women who have gone or are going through these support organizations and are now advocating to better not only their own lives, but the lives of their peers.

Many thanks to the incredible support and generosity from people from the hospitality community who rallied behind this cause – whether it was support through direct donations, the ‘Burger & Beer’ ticket sales at Butcher & Bullock or the silent auction and the 50/50 draw.  We hope that the Women Deliver Conference will have an impact on our community for many years to come.

Thank you to everyone who was a part of this achievement!
