After 72 captivating games, the FIFA World Cup 26™ Group Phase came to an end, ushering in an exciting slate of knockout games. Vancouver’s Round of 32 matchup featured Switzerland taking on Algeria, with the Swiss celebrating their first ever knockout win after 88 years with a 2-0 victory.

Following their close fought victory over Canada, Switzerland returned to BC Place full of confidence and backed by a track record of World Cup success. Since 1994, the Swiss progressed to the Round of 16 five times in six attempts. In 2026, they went a step further, making it all the way to the quarter finals, before being eliminated by Argentina.
The Desert Warriors Bow Out
Appearing in their first World Cup since 2014, Algeria qualified for the Round of 32 as one of the best third-placed teams following a thrilling 3-3 tie with Austria. During the closing stages of that match, Algeria set a World Cup record with an incredible 110 consecutive passes in the build-up to their 3rd goal.
With legendary attacker Riyad Mahrez pulling the strings, Algeria looked dangerous early in the game, before being caught on the counter attack by Switzerland. They were never able to pull themselves back into the game, enduring a disappointing loss and a strong sense of what might have been.
