FIFA World Cup 26™ Group B came to a thrilling climax at BC Place as Canada faced
Switzerland on June 24. The stadium was a sea of red as two sets of passionate fans willed their team on to victory. Switzerland proved too much for their Canadian hosts on the day, securing a 2-1 victory that kept them in Vancouver for the Round of 32.

The story of the match
A Missed Opportunity for Canada
The stakes were high for Jesse Marsch’s Canada side as they entered the final game of Group B. Secure a win or a draw, and they’d stay in Vancouver for the Round of 32. Lose, and they’d play their next game in Los Angeles. Unfortunately, Canada couldn’t call upon their talisman Alphonso Davies, as he remained on the bench due to injury.
A late rally saw an amazing goal from Promise David, setting up a grandstand finish. However, Canada couldn’t find the equalizer, meaning their knockout adventure went on the road to Los Angeles.
Switzerland - World Cup Specialists
As one of Europe’s most consistent performers, Switzerland proved a nightmare matchup for their Canadian hosts. The Swiss had reached the knockout phase in four of the past five World Cups, and they extended that proud record thanks to goals from Ruben Vargas, and rising sensation Johan Manzambi. It would prove to be the first of three games at BC Place for Switzerland, who turned Vancouver into a home away from home during the tournament.

Who scored the only World Cup goal ever for Canada?
Alphonso Davies scored the only ever goal recorded by team Canada on the FIFA World Cup™️ stage in 2022, with his header against Croatia in the 2nd match of the group stage assisted by Tajon Buchanen.
