Hot on the heels of their opening 1-1 tie against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto, Canada faced Qatar at BC Place on June 18. From coast to coast, Canadians had been waiting for this moment, and it didn’t disappoint. A sea of red filled the streets of Vancouver, inspiring Canada to a famous 6-0 victory over Qatar, the country’s first ever World Cup victory.

A Famous Victory for Canada
After kicking the tournament off in Toronto against Bosnia and Herzegovina, Canada set up their base camp in Vancouver for their final two group stage games. From early in the day, the energy in the city was incredible, with thousands of loud and colourful Canadian fans marching to the stadium in fine voice.
Once the action kicked off, Canada quickly established dominance, racking up a famous 6-0 victory and overwhelming Qatar in every area of the field. The only blemish on the day was an injury to inspirational midfielder Ismael Kone, which forced him out of the remainder of the tournament.
Qatar’s Quest for History
Qatar arrived in Vancouver determined to rewrite their FIFA World Cup ™ history. They made their tournament debut as hosts in 2022, becoming the first host nation to exit the tournament without a win. But that setback didn’t define them. They bounced back to clinch the Asian Cup title in 2023, before earning their place at FIFA World Cup 2026™ through qualifying.
Unfortunately, their group stage performance proved a disappointment, exiting after two defeats and a 1-1 tie with Switzerland.
