Fans of David Lynch are in luck. This month sees Vancouver celebrating two works by the acclaimed writer/director whose idiosyncratic approach has spawned its own adjective – “Lynchian” (UrbanDictionary.com: “having the same balance between the macabre and the mundane found in the works of filmmaker David Lynch”).

This Saturday night (March 19), devotees of the writer/director’s unique TV series Twin Peaks are invited out for “an evening of cherry pie, black coffee and drinks” – and music – at the WISE Hall in East Vancouver. And, on March 31, the Rio Theatre on Broadway presents a 30th anniversary screening of one of Lynch’s best-known movies, Blue Velvet.

Twin Peaks only ran from 1990-1991 (and was followed by a 1992 movie, Fire Walk With Me), but its cultural influence has been profound, with successive generations discovering the show (apparently, Lynch and co-creator Mark Frost are bringing it back next year). Twin Peaks Night is the brainchild of singer Lily Fawn, who performs with her group Songs from the Black Lodge and two other bands, Le Plus Simple and Blue Lodge. Burlesque dancer Melody Mangler also performs. Tickets are $15 at songsfromtheblacklodge or in person at the Wise Hall Lounge(1882 Adanac St.).

Four years prior to Twin Peaks, Lynch’s 1986 film Blue Velvet established the director as one of the American cinema’s premiere auteurs. The movie featured Dennis Hopper in a career-defining role as the Pabst Blue Ribbon-swilling maniac Frank. Kyle MacLachlan, who would go on to star in Twin Peaks, Laura Derna and Isabella Rossellini also starred.

The Rio screening is Thurs., March 31 at 9 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door (1660 E. Broadway). All tickets 19+ w/ ID for entry and bar service.
