Filming in Vancouver: Jessica Biel, Seth Rogen, Taraji P. Henson, Ed Helms, and more

Okay, kids, so we’ve got a ton of stuff to tell you about in this week’s roundup of what’s happening in Vancouver’s screen scene.

So much so, in fact, that we’re going to try and do it as efficiently as possible, otherwise you’ll be sitting here reading this column forever.

In this mix, there are two feature films, a number of TV series calling it a wrap, and a whole slew of TV pilots getting underway.

With that said, let’s get to it, shall we?

Feature films

Jessica Biel headlines the new TV series Limetown.

Taraji P. Henson (Hidden Figures) and Ed Helms (The Hangover) will be coming to Vancouver to shoot the Netflix feature Coffee and Kareem from April 22 to June 4.

In this police drama directed by Canadian filmmaker Michael Dowse (Goon), Helms will play a Detroit cop who, in order to clear his name, teams up with the 11-year-old son of his girlfriend, portrayed by Henson, to pursue the city’s most ruthless criminal.

Meanwhile, the sci-fi romance Little Fish starts shooting today (March 11) and will continue until April 12.

Directed by Chad Hartigan (Morris From America), this feature film revolves around a young couple who struggle to keep the flame of their love alive amidst an outbreak of a mysterious memory-loss epidemic that could potentially erase all memories of their relationship.

Olivia Cooke (Ready Player One) and Jack O’Connell (Unbroken) will portray the couple and they’ll be joined by Raúl Castillo, Soko, and Martin Hroch.

This week, quite a number of TV series that have been filming in town over the past year are finishing up work on their latest seasons.

The new Limetown, which began production on December 5, finishes Season 1 on Thursday (March 14).

The series is based on the popular fictional podcast about an investigative journalist, played by Jessica Biel (Total Recall) who delves into the mystery of 300 people who disappeared from a neuroscience research facility in Tennessee.

The cast also includes Stanely Tucci, Sheri Saum, Rekha Sharma, and Marlee Matlin.

A release date for the series hasn’t been announced yet.

The mermaid mystery-drama Siren wraps up work in front of the camera on 16 episodes of Season 2 on Friday (March 15), which has been shooting since July 26.

The series, which stars Alex Roe and Fola Evans-Akingbola as marine biologists who try to understand what drove a mermaid (Eline Powell) to come ashore and wreak havoc upon a coastal town.

Season 2 premiered on January 24.

On the same day that show finishes up, The Twilight Zonealso wraps. This revival anthology series, which draws upon various genres from sci-fi to horror and fantasy, began shooting its first season back on October 1.

Narrated by executive producer Jordan Peele (Get Out), the extensive list of actors who will appear in various episodes will include hometown talent Seth Rogen (The Disaster Artist) and Jacob Tremblay (Room), Zazie Beetz (who also starred in the Vancouver-shot Deadpool 2), Betty Gabriel, Kumail Nanjiani, John Cho, Adam Scott, Ginnifer Goodwin, Greg Kinnear, Steven Yeun, and Tracy Morgan. Just to name a few…

The series is scheduled to premiere on—not fooling—April 1.

Also wrapping on Friday (March 15) is The Man in the High Castle, which is completing production on Season 4.

A home-screen adaptation of Philip K. Dick’s 1962 novel, the series explored what America might have been like had Japan and Germany won the Second World War.

The cast includes Alexa Davalos, Rufus Sewell, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, DJ Qualls, and Luke Kleintank.

Alas, this season of the dystopian alternate history series, which will be released this autumn, has been revealed to be its last. So once the season premiere date is announced, get ready for its finale to air.

Now we’re getting into the thick of TV pilot season. Seriously—there are about 10 or so shooting in the city.

Stumptown starts today (March 11) and continues until March 22.

This adaptation of a graphic novel stars Vancouver-born actress Cobie Smulders (Avengers) as a former military intelligence officer who becomes a private investigator in Portland, Oregon.

Republic of Sarah also starts shooting today (March 11), running until March 26.

This potential new series, about a New Hampshire town that declares itself an independent nation after the discovery of a valuable resource, will be headlined by another Sarah: Sarah Drew (Grey’s Anatomy) as the town’s mayor.

The cast also includes Kirsten Nelson, James Lesure, Jonathan Slavin, Kimberly Guerrero, and Carlos Leal.

On Wednesday (March 13), The Lost Boys gets into production, continuing until April 2.

This home-screen adaptation of the 1987 cult-hit horror-comedy movie will star Tyler Posey, Kiele Sanchez, Rio Mangini, and Del Zamora.

The series will follow two brothers who, after their father’s death, move with their mother to her Californian seaside hometown, which has a secret underworld of vampires.

The musical dramedy Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist starts production Thursday (March 14) and will wrap on March 29.

Jane Levy (Don’t Breathe) stars as an awkward but highly intelligent young woman who develops an unusual ability to hear the thoughts of people as songs and musical numbers.

The cast will also include Peter Gallagher, John Clarence Stewart, Mary Steenburgen, Skylar Astin, and Alex Newell.
