Just as Halloween has given way to preparations for the winter holiday season, two supernatural-related productions are wrapping up—and on the same day, no less.

One is a horror-thriller that incorporates elements of an Indigenous folk tale while the other is a martial-arts action TV series set in a West Coast Chinatown.

So if you’re interested, after the jump is this week’s a quick look at what’s going on in Vancouver’s screen scene.

The supernatural feature film Antlers calls it a wrap on Tuesday (November 20).

It’s been filming around the Lower Mainland, as well as Hope, B.C., since October 1.

The horror-thriller stars Keri Russell (who also landed a role in Star Wars: Episode IX) as a smalltown Oregon teacher who, along with her sheriff brother (Jesse Plemons) becomes involved with a mysterious and withdrawn student (Jeremy T. Thomas) who has a dark secret that is linked to the survival of the town.

The storyline is based upon the short story “The Quiet Boy” by Nick Antosca and also draws upon the Algonquin myth of the Windigo, a cannibalistic creature that humans transform into after being extremely weakened or corrupted.

While the film also deals with the opioid crisis and family dynamics, one of the film’s themes is about nature exacting revenge on humans for the environmental damage caused by over-exploitation of resources.

The cast also includes Graham Greene, Scott Haze, Rory Cochrane, and Amy Madigan.

And among the producers of the film is Oscar-winning horror-fantasy filmmaker Guillermo del Toro (The Shape of Water).

Meanwhile, a new martial-arts TV series is also finishing up production in Vancouver on the same day.

Netflix’s Wu Assassins will complete shooting 10 episodes for its first season on Tuesday (November 20), having started back on August 13.

The action-crime series is set in San Francisco’s Chinatown where aspiring chef Kai Jin, played by Indonesian star Iko Uwais (The Raid), who teams up with a homicide detective to solve an ancient mystery and discovers his destiny is to round up the powers of an ancient triad while taking on supernatural assassins.

Uwais, who crossed over into Hollywood films such as Mile 22 and Star Wars: The Force Awakens, also served as martial-arts choreographer, stunt coordinator, and producer for Wu Assassins.

And that’s all for this week.

As we head towards the holiday season and the end of the year, a number of productions will be wrapping up.

But that’s actually good news for viewers as it means things are moving closer to release dates for the shows so you can watch them.

We’ll have more details on what else is coming and going from the streets of Hollywood North in the weeks to come. So until next time, happy star-spotting—or Vancouver-spotting on a screen near you.
