Filming in Vancouver: Child’s Play to wrap, The Magicians to finish up Season 4
Just as Halloween has wrapped up, a killer doll that has been terrorizing the city is finally ending its reign of terror.
And along with other things that go bump in the night, a TV series about a group of magicians battling dark forces is also finishing up production on its latest season.
Here’s a quick roundup of what’s departing from Vancouver’s screen scene this week.
The horror feature film Child’s Play started shooting back on September 17 and will finish on Thursday (November 8).
The first Child’s Play movie, directed by Tom Holland, was released in 1988 and followed a storyline that involved a toy doll becoming possessed by the soul of a serial killer. The franchise went on to produce six sequels (in addition to merchandise and more) that became increasingly campy as it went along.
The reboot, directed by Lars Klevberg (Polaroid), stars Aubrey Plaza (Parks and Recreation) as a mother who gives her son (Gabriel Bateman) a buddy doll for his birthday, unaware of the toy’s sinister nature.
Whether or not the new storyline will include the same elements as the original series remains to be seen.
The cast also includes Brian Tyree Henry (Atlanta) and Nicole Anthony (Super Monsters).
A TV series is also said to be in development but there’s no word yet on where that one might be filmed.
Meanwhile, The Magicians wrap up Season 4 on Friday (November 9).
The fantasy-drama series, based on the novels by Lev Grossman, began shooting 13 episodes for its latest season on June 11.
In Season 3, the group who trained at a secretive academy and use their magical abilities to ward off evil, embarked upon a quest to retrieve seven keys that will restore magic after it was shut off in Season 2.
Season 4 will see the main characters in a magical witness protection with their memories erased. They’ll also have to contend with an ancient monster that has taken over the body of Eliot (Hale Appleman).
The new season will also introduce a new part-human, part-amphibian character: Lord Fresh, played by Anthony Ingram.
The cast includes Jason Ralph, Stella Maeve, Arjun Gupta, Olivia Taylor Dudley, Jade Tailor, Rick Worthy, Summer Bishil, Brittany Curran, and Trevor Einhorn.
Season 4 is slated to premiere on January 23, 2019.
