Filming in Vancouver: Are You Afraid of the Dark?, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, 90210, and more

Within the dates of the current week, there aren’t any screen projects coming or going from the city as numerous productions continue on their regular course.

However, there’s plenty coming up on the horizon to tell you about.

There are three horror TV series, including a drama about a handless teen, a teen witch drama, and a ‘90s revival.

And speaking of reviving the ‘90s and teens, there’s a famous franchise that’s embarking upon its latest entry.

First up, here’s some nostalgic news for TV viewers who grew up watching scary shows.

The Canadian horror-fantasy anthology TV series Are You Afraid of the Dark?will be coming back to home screens.

The original series, shot here in Richmond as well as in Montreal, ran from 1990 to 1996 before a revival series from 1999 to 2000. It was also broadcast on Nickelodeon.

The series revolved around a group of kids dubbed the Midnight Society who gathered around a campfire and exchanged scary stories.

The miniseries, which will shoot in Vancouver from June 10 to July 19, will premiere in October. A theatrical movie adaptation of the series to be directed by D.J. Caruso (I Am Number Four) was originally slated to be released in the same month, timed to coincide with the release of the miniseries, but the movie release date is now up in the air.

Ah well, in the meantime, there’s the miniseries to look forward to, as well as who might be cast in the show.

But that’s not the only upcoming TV project that’s linked to a show from the ‘90s.

BH90210 will shoot six episodes for Season 1 from May 21 to July 31, with production based in North Vancouver.

It’s based on the teen drama Beverly Hills, 90210, which ran from 1990 to 2000, which led to several spinoffs, including 90210 from 2008 to 2013.

This new series sounds like it will be quite different, as it will feature the original cast in a meta-fictional series playing versions of themselves as they reunite to try to reboot the series.

Original cast members Vancouver’s Jason Priestley, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Carteris, Brian Austin Green, and Tori Spelling are set to be joined by Shannen Doherty (also a cast member of the original Charmed TV series), who previously hadn’t been part of the project. She was announced on April 26 to be joining the cast.

The series will pay tribute to the late Luke Perry, who had been unable to join the project due to his work on the locally shot Riverdale before he died on March 4.

Speaking of Riverdale, another Archie Comics TV series will be coming back to shoot more seasons of its hit show.

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is scheduled to shoot Season 2 from May 17 to February 20.

The supernatural horror series revolves around Sabrina Spellman, played by Kiernan Shipka, who is learning about her part-human, part-witch identity and what she can do with her magical abilities.

While fighting evil, protecting humanity, and saving the world, of course.

The cast also includes Ross Lynch, Lucy Davis, Chance Perdomo, Michelle Gomez, Jaz Sinclair, Tati Gabrielle, Adeline Rudolph, Richard Coyle, and Miranda Otto.

Continuing on with the horror theme, the TV series Sacred Liesis returning to shoot Season 2 from July 3 to September 13.

This series premiered its first season, consisting of 10 episodes, on July 27, 2018.

The story is based upon Stephanie Oakes’ novel The Sacred Lies of Minnow Bly (which, in turn, draws upon a Grimm fairy tale).

The show follows the journey of a 17-year-old girl without hands (played by Elena Kampouris) who escapes from a cult whose leader is killed.

After leaving, she finds herself in juvenile detention after assaulting a young man.

The cast also includes Kevin Carroll, Kiana Medeira, Toby Huss, and Ryan Robbins.

Well with this bevy of upcoming thrills, there’s certainly plenty to look forward to that’ll keep us entertained in the near future.
