Can you imagine living in a world where you could upload yourself into a new body if you wanted to?

Or a world in which you could attend a high-school to be trained to be a killer?

Or grew up with the ability to foretell when someone is about to die?

Those are the premises of three productions on the slate for filming in Vancouver. And they’re a part of this week’s roundup of what’s shooting in the city.

Interested? Well, then, read on.

Altered Carbon

First up, a sci-fi series that was greenlit to come back to town for another season will start filming next year.

The Netflix sci-fi series Altered Carbon, based on the novels by Richard K. Morgan, will be returning to Vancouver to shoot Season 2 from February 4 to June 25, 2019.

However, there are some major changes underway.

Altered Carbon

Anthony Mackie (Captain America) will be taking over the role of Takeshi Kovacs, formerly played by Joel Kinnaman.

The actor switch is made possible by the storyline: this is a future world in which people can upload their consciousness into a new body.

It’s set in a future San Francisco called Bay City (played by none other than Vancouver).

Altered Carbon

In Season 1, Kinnaman played Kovacs who was inhabiting the body of a police officer, who had been framed for a crime he didn’t commit, while trying to track down a killer.

Season 2 will see Kovacs take over a body portrayed by Mackie but we’ll have to wait to see where the storyline goes with this new development.

The release date also hasn’t been announced yet so we’ll have to wait to hear about that as well.

Altered Carbon

Meanwhile, a TV series that’s well underway (that was obscured by its production code name) is Season 1 of Deadly Class, which started back on August 24 and will continue to December 6.

This adaptation of the 2014 Image Comics graphic novel previously shot a TV pilot here from November 15 to December 5 in 2017.

Altered Carbon

The series is set in the 1980s, in which a street teen (played by Benjamin Wadsworth) is recruited into a private academy where crime families send their children to be trained to become assassins.

Altered Carbon

The cast includes Benedict Wong (Doctor Strange), Lana Condor, Maria Gabriela de Faris, Luke Tennie, Liam James, Michel Duval, and Tom Stevens.

Deadly Class will premiere on SyFy on January 16.

Altered Carbon

Meanwhile, a Canadian feature film will be finishing up this week.

Monkey Beach is a big-screen adaptation of local First Nations author Eden Robinson’s debut novel (published in 2000) by writer-director Loretta Todd (Tansi! Nehiyawetan).

Production, which took place in both Kitamat, B.C., and Vancouver, started on September 17 and wraps up on Friday (October 12)

The story follows a young woman, played by Grace Dove (The Revenant), who has the ability to foresee death. When her brother disappears at sea under suspicious circumstances, she sets out to do what she can to save him.

Altered Carbon

The cast includes Adam Beach (Arctic Air), as well as Nathaniel Arcand, Glen Gould, Stefany Mathias, Joel Oulette, Ta’Kaiya Blaney, Miika Bryce Whiskeyjack, and Tina Marie Lameman.

Altered Carbon

On a different note, some TV series that are or will be starting in on their first season but details aren’t yet available about are:

  • Gravity Productions, from October 1 to March 20;
  • The Murders, shooting from October 9 to December 20;
  • Magic Hour (also known as Ink), from November 12 to April 15.

When we do find out confirmed information about these shows, dear readers, we will let you know about them.

In the meantime, we’ll have other news to discuss about what’s going on in Hollywood North so until the next installation, happy star-spotting on the streets and screens of Vancouver.
