Jaz'N'theViolin Concert Series takes place at Pyatt Hall in Vancouver this year. The series, which has had great success in the San Francisco Bay area over the last eight years, is a celebration of the often-overlooked role of the violin in the origins of jazz. The series features three concerts (one which took place last Sunday), each showcasing a renowned international virtuoso, and I'd love to have you consider the Lache Cercel concert on Sunday, March 19th for your upcoming column. The concert will illustrate the deep sympathies between North America and Cercel's own violin-based Roma jazz, both of which bloomed from similar systems of oppression. Alongside Cercel, attendees will enjoy the devilish fun of his accompanying musicians, including guitarists Don Ogilvie and Stephen Nikleva, bassists Sam Soichet and Kyle Hagen, drummer Paul Townsend, and vocalists Jennifer Layne, Merrier Ben Amor, and Laura Crema.

Mads Tolling is one of the finest jazz violinists in the world today. A native of Denmark, he now resides in the San Francisco Bay Area. Mads has played with Chick Core, Jean-Luc Ponty, toured with Stanley Clarke, the Turtle Island Quartet, and many more.

He will be appearing in concert with Vancouver's favourite drummer-less jazz trio, Trilogy. Featuring pianist Miles Black, guitarist, Bill Coon, and bassist Jodi Proznick, Trilogy has been wowing Vancouver audiences since 2008 with their flights of daring while demonstrating their marvelous musicianship, often playing spontaneous concerts with no set program, each member surprising the others with their tune selection on the spot.
